Hidden deep in the Sierra de Madrid lies a forgotten medieval bridge. Once part of an ancient route linking remote villages or trade paths. Not a soul to be seen or heard just me and my running steps crossing a relic of the region’s medieval history. A further 20 minutes along the path you can see an old flour mill but tread with caution and be careful of the bats.
So, If you’re looking for a peaceful yet historically rich spot just a short drive from Madrid, the Puente del Grajal in Colmenar Viejo offers a compelling mix of nature, heritage and adventure. Built during the Islamic period of the Iberian Peninsula and situated over the upper course of the Río Manzanares, this bridge originally formed part of a military-road that connected various watch-towers and fortifications in the so-called “Marca Media” region.
The craftsmanship: The bridge features a single arch of medio punto (half-round arch) constructed in granite blocks, with the deck gently curved, sitting directly on the rock below.

It is located south of a hydroelectric power station fed by a siphon from a dam farther north (upstream.) There is a hiking trail which goes north from the bridge allowing access to the river in certain spots. Appears to be popular with dog people. There isn't much of an option for parking. I found a spot a short ways away west of the bridge, but there is one which can accommodate 2 to 3 cars on the Colmenar side of the canyon fairly close...
