Castell de Verdera (Sant Salvador de Verdera) — Attraction in el Port de la Selva

Sant Salvador Castle stands on the very summit of Verdera Mountain at an altitude of around 670 m. From the top of the mountain, you can see the Shrine of Sant Onofre at the foot of the cliff on which the castle perches. Beyond to the west, is L'Empordà, which stretches out northwards as far as the Pyrenees, where you can make out the profile of Canigó. The Gulf of Roses and the Medes Islands are also clearly visible, as is El Montgrí massif, Les Guilleries and El Montseny. You may also see skydiving happening on the airfield several km to the West. To the east, you can see the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and the coast of Cap de Creus, which links to the north with the Gulf of Lion. This commanding position and outstanding view made the castle strategically very important. In addition, the steep and almost inaccessible terrain provided a system of defence that made the castle impregnable.

The castle is mentioned in numerous documents due to the constant disputes between the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and the counts of Empúries, who vied with each other to control it. The first reference dates from 904, suggesting that the castle was already in existence in the 9th century. Nevertheless, many of the surviving structures date from the 13th century, the time when Count Ponç IV of Empúries ordered that a new fort be built given the poor state of repair of the existing castle.

With the passing of the years, the strategic importance of castles perched on rocks -the invincibility of which was due to the difficult terrain on which they were sited- declined as a result of developments in weaponry and warfare techniques. Even so, Sant Salvador Castle was still in use in the 16th century as a look-out post to combat piracy.

It is easiest to approach from the north via a short track from the car park, however an alternative (challenging) hiking route is available from the south, starting in El Más Fumats and passing over the summits...

Se trata de un castillo en ruinas situado en un punto estratégico y visualmente impresionante, ni más ni menos que encima de la cima de la sierra de Verdera.

Me pregunto como pudieron construir algo así y qué difícil fué...

No llevo la cuenta de los ascensos, pero sin duda repetiré decenas de veces más.

La ruta de ascenso más impresionante y a su vez exigente, parte del pueblo que comparte nombre:

Palau saverdera, el ascenso directo tiene 650m de desnivel positivo, a lo largo de tan solo (más o menos) 4km.

Desde Palau también se inicia cada año una carrera de trail que asciende hasta el castillo y baja dándo la vuelta a la sierra para finalizar el recorrido en el mismo pueblo.

Y para los que no se lo quieren perder y no pueden/quieren hacer el ascenso a pie desde abajo del todo, también se puede subir por carretera (por la parte de atrás) hasta prácticamente el 80% de la subida y por así, disfrutar de las vistas).

Recomiendo igualmente un mínimo de preparación física y un calzado apropiado.

Según la época, el textil especializado es muy recomendable, sobre todo por fuertes...

Tras llegar con la Camper al parking público 1 a la hora que están a punto de cerrar el monasterio de Sant Pere de Rodes para que la mayoría de los vehículos se hubieran ido nos dirigimos andando primero al Monasterio y de ahí tras visitarlo por fuera al Castell. La subida tiene un poco de dificultad por la pendiente que sube rápidamente y hay partes muy rocosas y no de "sendero". Es recomendable llevar calzado cerrado como bambas o botas de montaña pero vimos algunas personas con sandalias y los niños y niñas más o menos valientes lo pueden hacer sin problemas. Se trata de un castillo fortaleza en estado de ruinas. El premio son unas vistas inmejorables del Golfo de Rosas por un lado de la montaña y poder ver hasta el Canigó por el otro lado. Impresionante y majestuoso. 100% recomendable
