Well, I don’t know if it was because of me or not, but I feel a huge sadness looking at this picture of the Sabina’s desecration by tourists. I will be getting in touch with El Hierros’ authorities to see if there anything I can do to help protect this fabulous tree which has triumphed over the Elements, but could be killed by the ignorance and carelessness of people. But in the meantime, if anyone reads this who has any influence, let’s try to spread the word that respect for life of all kinds is the key to a better way of living. Maybe someone would be kind enough to translate this message into Spanish. But I have an uneasy feeling from looking at these tourists’ attire that make me suspect they were not Spanish, but from somewhere closer to my own islands.

Sabina de El Hierro (Latin: Juniperus phoenice). It is a shrub or a small tree. In the Canary Islands, it reaches a height of 2 or no more 3 meters. It usually occurs no higher than 1,400 m a.s.l. Resistant to frost and dry climate. The tree doesn't need much water. The shape of the tree arises due to strong winds. The wood quality is very good. In the past, furniture and basic tools were made of wood. A lot of trees were used for house fuel. That is why there are not many trees left in all Canarias. These trees occur on El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Trees do not occur on Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Unfortunately, both Carreteras de Tierra HI-506 and HI-507 are more suitable for SUV 4x4 then for an ordinary car. Just after visit Sabina de El Hierro I drove straight to the car wash in Valverde. This is the life of a mountain tourist...

I admired Sabina de El Hierro in...

Schöner Baum und schöne Landschaft drum herum, es hat sich gelohnt. Man kann über einen kleinen Wanderweg vom Baum aus (ca. 1,2 km) zum Mirador de Bascos laufen. Die Aussichtsplattform selbst ist gesperrt, man bekommt aber trotzdem eine gute Aussicht und von der Landschaft was zu sehen.

Die Zufahrtsstraße erfolgt durch ein Tor, welches bei Durchfahrt zu öffnen und wieder zu schließen ist. Grund dafür sind Kühe, die dort leben. Ich habe mich erst nicht getraut, das Tor zu öffnen und an den Kühen vorbei zu fahren, und mich deshalb über Verhaltensregeln bei Begegnung mit Kühen informiert. Eigentlich wird empfohlen, so viel Abstand zu den Kühen zu lassen, wie möglich - was hier nicht funktioniert. Just in dem Moment kam plötzlich jemand anderes mit dem Auto von der anderen Seite, es stiegen sogar Leute aus und gingen direkt auf die Kühe zu. Diesen hat es sichtlich nicht gefallen, gingen den Leuten aber aus dem Weg. Die Leute sind dann anschließend nach öffnen des Tores wieder weg gefahren.

Daher mein Hinweis: bleiben Sie ruhig und gelassen, öffnen und schließen sie langsam das Tor. Bewegen Sie sich dabei nicht hektisch und fahren Sie im Anschluss ebenso langsam und vorsichtig in Schrittgeschwindigkeit an Ihnen vorbei. Wenn Kühe im Weg stehen/ liegen sollten, warten sie einfach kurz. Respektieren Sie die Tiere und seien sie anständig, dann bleiben diese auch ruhig, gelassen und Sie können vorsichtig passieren. Eine Kuh war sogar sehr neugierig, hat etwas am Auto gerochen und zu mir ins Auto geschaut (Fenster war zu, dafür habe ich nun ein kleines Andenken von der nassen Schnauze auf...
