Caldaria de Lobios is a hidden gem just across the border in Galicia, and I absolutely loved it! Open 24/7 and free of charge, it offers a truly unique thermal experience 🌿💧 .

🌡️ What Makes It Special

The hot springs flow at 35–45 °C year-round, perfect for easing muscle pain, arthritis, skin conditions, and stress relief ⛲ . These waters have been used since Roman times, and the place still feels magical and natural—no built spa needed.

🏞️ Nature & Setting

Nestled in the lush landscapes of the Gerês/Xurés Transboundary Park, the surroundings are serene and green. There’s a small river beach and grassy areas where you can relax and have a picnic if you bring your own food 🧺 .

📝 Practical Tips

Bring a bathing suit, towel, and flip-flops—there’s minimal infrastructure nearby, so it’s best to come prepared.

There’s a small café in the area, but it doesn’t always serve food—pack snacks and water just in case .

Best visited during cooler months or cooler days to avoid thermal shock and overcrowding. In summer it can get busy but still manageable .

✅ Why Visit

Completely free and accessible year-round—rare for such a thermal site

Perfect balance of spa therapy and nature

Ideal for spontaneous wellness moments, especially after hiking or exploring nearby Roman ruins

Such an incredible experience. We went in a change of plans, because it looked like it was going to rain in Gerês. But it turned out to be a highlight in our vacations.

The water boils out of the earth at maybe 90C. At the main pool, the temperature was warm, just perfect to chill. Out of curiosity, only men were in it. I joined anyway and relaxed for a nice while. Besides this, throughout the Caldo River shore, small pools are set and near a couple one can observe the water vapor blowing out of the ground. Further from that the water becomes cooler as it mingles with the river. Look for the spot that best suits you. It took me a while! Make sure you bathe in the cool river water after the chilled hot bath, it’s such a boost of energy.

It was a weekday so there was a few people and caravans parked. I heard it’s crowded on weekends.

Amazingly it is free! And most of all, such a beautiful experience with nature as setting.

Get a “caña” and a “bocadillo” at the coffee if your stomach...

What a spot and almost hard to believe you can enjoy it for free. The water has a perfect temperature, and if you get too hot you can cool yourself down in the cold river just next to it. I could spend all day here! Also a big parking next to it and if you drive a few 100 meters further you have a good spot to park your camper. Also quite a few walks start here, one of which takes you along a river and many old restored water mills. Beautiful in the month May with the hills blooming in yellow and purple!
