Casa de Campo (translating to country house in Spanish) is a large public park located to the west of the historic centre of Madri. The park is over 1,700 hectares in size and is the largest park in Madrid.
The park was originally a royal hunting estate and was created by King Philip II in the 16th century - from which the park gets its name. The estate was originally used primarily by Spanish royalty for leisure and was only opened to the public in 1931. This was due to the transition of Spain from a monarchy to a new Republican government which aimed to modernize Spain and break from class privilege and divide.
Today the park features some spacious and beautiful forests and gardens and rolling hills, it is a great spot to take a break from busy city life and go for a walk. Due to the quantity of hills there are a lot of points from which visitors can appreciate panoramic views to the rest of the park and even back over to the city skyline. There are a lot of cycling options available too including a covered cycleway. There are other curiosities to find in the park too such as remaining Spanish Civil War bunkers and the Valdeza Aqueduct.
Lago (lake) is a great spot for a picnic or for eating at one of the several lakeside cafes and is a nice entry point to visit the park. Metro access is available by the Lago station on line 10 of the Madrid Metro. Casa de Campo also boasts the Madrid Parque de Atracciones and the Zoo...
Read moreit's a really nice place and there's a lot of nature to discover and to enjoy. A place of Peace when you want to escape the city. besides that I found there was a lot of trash and waste amongst and beneath the pathes. A cool site to have a wonderful sunset from is the first heigh after the tenis-curse. From there you might also get a view over the city. Also there might be a fenicular from the city to a heigh in Casa de Campo. It's also a very good and charmful way for bike tours (especially MTB), hiking, walking with family, jogging... at the parking-lot (free) is also a soccer-field (ground); nerby a playground. On weekends there's a lot going on. During all years Aseos (WC, restrooms) are open and cleaned from 10-18h. In the night this place turns out in a mostly weird way for most of us. Nonetheless Policia-Headquarters seem to be close, prostitution takes place (what also leaves waste that lay arround in wide parts around the whole place, such wadte you wont your children play with; not even yourself ;-) ). To finish there are several restaurants around to that beautiful nice lake nearby, but none I ate at. Facing the lake with the paking in the back, the restaurant on the left has a beverage dispenser accessible all day/night. The Metro station "Lago" is close to the parking lot. If you want yourself to park the be early - or pretty late...
Read moreWe went here for the day thinking that we would only spend one or two hours here but in the end we spent over give hours here. We went in the weekdays so it wasn't very busy which was great because we didn't have to wait for people to move out the way to take a picture.y favourite part of the day was the dolphin show which was very impressive ( i posted a video of it ) and it well out did my expectations of what I thought they would do. For the people who think that keeping g dolphins in captivity is bad you or wrong in this case as their enclosure was nice and big it was also clean. All of they looked happy and well looked after. The giant Panda was also great to see as not many zoos have them because they are endangered which is a shame they all had lots of bamboo to eat and water to drink in total there were three pandas you could see. Overall very...
