A really high quality museum that tells the story of Spanish aviation from its conception to the present day. There are a number of unique airframes here and they've been very well preserved, including the de Havilland Dragon Rapide that ferried General Franco to Spain to begin his coup d'état. The museum is roughly half outdoors and half indoors, thankfully the Madrid weather gives you good odds of a dry day.

Almost all exhibits are in Spanish and English and the staff are very helpful. The gift shop is one of the best I've seen in an aviation museum, and I've been to a lot! I'd recommend 2-3 hours minimum for a visit, we spent about 3 hours and I personally felt a bit rushed (not so sure about my wife).

Given that this is run by the Spanish Air Force, entry is free so some appreciation is due to the Spanish taxpayer for funding such a great museum. The only downside is that Cuatro Vientos isn't the easiest museum to reach via public transport. The only option is a bus which drops you a ~10 min walk away from the place. You will need to plan ahead if you're not driving.

All in all, Spain's premier air museum and a must-visit for aviation fans visiting Madrid and the...

Aspectos a mejorar:

Consejos:

If you have either interest in aerospace or Spanish history, this museum is an amazing choice.

By the way of engaging displays and unique machines the museum will introduce you:

the Cierva autogyros, helicopter/aircraft hybrids and Spanish gift to aviation

the daring interwar attempts to connect the Spanish-speaking world by the route of air and the forgotten colonial wars in North Africa, which put the country in a very bad place

the desperate times of the Civil War, when both sides fought on anything that flew, while stuck between Italy, Germany and the USSR

the post-war isolation of the Francoist regime, the peculiar machines this situation created and the Nazi engineers, who helped to build them

and the way in which the Spanish Air Force returned to the world skies despite all previous adversity...

If such topics leave you at least a bit curious, then visit this place less than an hour from the centre of the city. In a country which still haven't found a common narrative of its own modern history, the old flying machines tell an incredibly interesting, important and...

Our recent visit to the Museum of Aeronautics and Astronautics was nothing short of extraordinary! This was our second time exploring this gem, and once again, it left us with incredibly positive emotions. The museum boasts an impressive collection of historic aircraft, detailed models, and supporting materials that cater to aviation enthusiasts and curious visitors alike. The depth and variety of the exhibits are remarkable, offering a comprehensive journey through the history of aviation. What truly sets this museum apart is its exceptional exhibition of Spanish aircraft. Many of these unique pieces are not displayed anywhere else in the world, making it a one-of-a-kind experience. The curation highlights Spain’s rich contributions to aviation history, and the attention to detail is outstanding. To top it all off, the museum is absolutely free, making it accessible to everyone. It’s undoubtedly one of the best aviation museums in the world, and we can’t recommend it highly enough to anyone visiting Madrid. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, this museum is sure to inspire and amaze!
