One of the beaches in Europe. Very clean, great sand and very shallow slope into the sea. A beautiful place not to be missed. There are signs for the beach as you reach San Jose. It is about 4km on an unsurfaced road. There is parking which is a short walk away. This is not free in high season, €5 this summer. I understand that parking can be a problem in July/August. Take plenty of drinking water/food as there are no facilities of any kind at or near the beach.

Great, great place. Ideal for swimming, sunbathing (watch out!), trekking, sightseeing, snorkelling, reading, breathing, daydreaming. Crystal-clear chilled water in this Mediterranean unique volcanic geography. Visit Cabo de Gata's beaches in low season - autumn through spring - and you will get the most of the experience. In summer the management of the natural park has established restrictions for entering, then just go earlier in the morning and get the bus.

Highly overrated. For any beach between Playa de los Genoveses and Cala Carbon there was a 6eur/ car fee to enter. We arrived at 2 pm, waited 1 hour in line. The beach was windy, the sand was extremely sticky and got everywhere. There were no showers or freshwater fountains. The positive part is that the places are limited so it would not get overcrowded, the water was clear, which allowed some snorkeling l, but there weren't that many things to see.

La Playa de Mónsul, de arena fina y aguas cristalinas, se encuentra cerca de la almeriense población de San José. Es junto a la playa de los Genoveses una de las playas emblemáticas del Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Níjar. Se puede llegar a la playa en un autobús que parte de San José, en bicicleta o caminando unos cuatro kilómetros. También es posible utilizar un automóvil circulando por un camino de tierra y estacionar en una zona de aparcamiento que se encuentra a unos 200 metros de la playa, que en temporada alta tiene el inconveniente de que es de pago y de que puede estar llena y en este caso una barrera, cercana a San José, nos impida que pasemos en coche. En cuanto llegamos a la playa de Mónsul percibimos la presencia de una gran roca volcánica conocida como la "Ola petrificada" y también denominada "La Peineta", pero la singularidad de la playa se completa con una zona dunar y con un domo volcánico de hialoclastitas en la brecha autoclástica que separa la playa de Mónsul de la playa de la Media Luna. Todo ello ha convertido a Mónsul como un lugar utilizado para filmar secuencias cinematográficas, entre otras las de las películas: Indiana Jones y La última Cruzada, El viento y el León, La Historia Interminable, Hable con ella, El Bulevard del Ron y en anuncios de televisión y videoclips musicales.

Great little secluded beach. You have to be careful if you go swimming as there can be strong currents and there are no lifeguards. You can walk to the beach or you can take the car to the last parking and walk. If you go by car you need to buy a day permit to enter the area and take the dirt track. Beware that there are no services at the beach so make sure you bring everything you may need, and take everything back with you.

La playa un espectáculo, su acceso una odisea. Hay que llegar al lugar muy temprano (8 o 9 de la mañana como máximo) para poder acceder al parking de vehiculos, ya que tiene aforo limitado y son pocas plazas. En la última rotonda de acceso se ponen dos personas y prohíben el paso cuando está lleno. La opción alternativa es coger un autobús que tiene varias paradas en las distintas calas (Genoveses, Barronal, Monsul, Media luna y Carbón). El servicio de bus sale desde la parada que existe en el centro del pueblo de San José (al lado del Supermercado Suma) y hace paradas en cada cala, dejando a los viajeros a unos 200m de la playa. Los ticket de autobús sólo se pueden comprar en la oficina de turismo (al lado del supermercado Suma del centro) y muy importante: sólo admiten pago en metálico. Además, en nuestro caso, íbamos con mascota (un perro pequeño) y tuvimos que buscarnos la vida en la zona para comprar un transportin en el que pudiéramos llevar al animal, ya que en el autobús no permiten subir animales sin él. Como última opción, existe la posibilidad de aparcar el coche por las inmediaciones de la rotonda de acceso al camino de tierra que lleva a las diferentes calas y transitar a pie los 4km del mismo (distancia menor hasta la primera Cala: Genoveses).

The Playa de Mónsul, also known as the Ensenada de Mónsul, is a beach located 4 km southwest of the municipality of San José on the coast of the Province of Almería in southeast Andalusia, Spain. It is one of the most famous and recognizable beaches in Spain, and is a popular recreation area.
