Down a winding 9 kilometre no through road one finds a landscape which is the essential las hurdes ...the land without bread featured in the famous film. Without bread probably literally, for the terrain, mountainous with few arable spaces , could not provide the grain needed for bread. Everywhere there are terraces...the creation of which must have involved immense effort. Small areas by the river, which is lovely to view and hear, are allotments where even today the main crop seems to be potatoes. Here more than anywhere else in Las Hurdes I think one can comprehend the isolation and sheer grind of daily life in the past. The scenery is stunning. The impact of human activity is evident in the shaping of the terrain to meet basic needs. If you are energetic you can walk the Ruta El Chorro de La Miacera to the waterfall that feeds into the river that winds through the valley. I am not sure but it may be seasonally affected. From a viewpoint on the road back to Nuno Moral, one can look down on ruined buildings by the winding river and further appreciate the remarkable activity that shaped this landscape. Then go to Asegur and explore the old abandoned...in the main... village to the right as you enter the bridge from the south. It will complete the total experience.
