Cristo Del Otero — Attraction in Palencia

"At the top of the Cerro del Otero hill stands the Cristo del Otero, a monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The work of the distinguished Palencia sculptor Victorio Macho (1887-1966), it has become an artistic icon and tourist symbol of the city of Palencia.

This monumental concrete sculpture owes its existence to the tenacity of Bishop Parrado, the architect Jerónimo Arroyo and his brilliant sculptor.

It is the tallest Christ in Spain and one of the tallest in the world. It measures more than 21 metres and weighs 392 tonnes.

The first stone was laid on 15 June 1930 and it was built in just eight months, being completed in February 1931. It was inaugurated on 12 June 1931. Coincidentally, the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro was inaugurated in the same year and the two cities partner in joint actions to promote the two Christs internationally.

The world's third largest Jesus will not disappoint! See the Lord on top of a hill on the outskirts of a minor town. The Big Jesus was impressive in its artistic style, seen in the impressive architecture. There is a museum at the feet of Jesus to explain the design of the Third Largest Jesus in the world (behind the one in Rio Di Janeiro and another massive Jesus) with information in Spanish (not surprising seeing as it is in Spain). The view was also amazing. The only disturbing thing about this particularly large son of the Lord was that He had no eyes in his eye sockets. Célebre monumento del conocido escultor palentino Victorio Macho, emblema y símbolo de la ciudad que se asienta sobre el cerro desde el que se puede disfrutar de preciosas vistas y espectaculares panorámicas de la capital vaccea.

Este símbolo indiscutible de la ciudad a cuyos pies se halla enterrado su artífice es un cristo esbelto, hierático, de resonancias cubistas y con ciertos aires del arte del Antiguo Egipto; se trata de uno de los más altos del mundo, que se erige como columna vertical frente a la horizontalidad de los campos de Castilla conformando estampas fascinantes. A sus pies están la ermita y el museo y un mirador digno de visitar.

Actualmente no se puede ascender por el interior del monumento, pero la visita a aquel lugar, en el populoso barrio que de dicha escultura toma el nombre, se antoja imprescindible para cualquier foráneo. Para los autóctonos o aquí afincados también es una excursión frecuente, ya fuera cuando íbamos de críos, en mi caso con mis abuelos maternos y mi madre, o ya, con algunos años más, con amigos, bien alguna tarde de paseo o como colofón a alguna noche en la que acabar un día redondo, pues se trata de esos sitios emblemáticos de la ciudad como, desde otra perspectiva, también lo pueda ser, por ejemplo, el pulmón verde del monte El Viejo. Un lugar en el que disfrutar de magníficas vistas de la ciudad y en el que culminar el día algunas veces. Como he dicho, para los de fuera, un lugar de obligada visita.
