Just a few kilometres southeast of the village of Pitillas is the Pitillas lagoon, quite an unsung avian treasure house in Navarra and well worth a visit for any birder who is in the vicinity. On our Birding In Spain scheduled and private tours in Navarra we always visit this site. Except when the water level is too low it’s an excellent site for both Eurasian Bittern, and Bearded Tit, with a strong supporting cast of wetland birds such as Eurasian Spoonbill, Black-necked Grebe, Red Crested Pochard, Whiskered Tern and others. You should be able to locate Savi’s and Great Reed Warblers too, and I always enjoy listening to the singing Skylarks along the walking itinerary on the western fringe of the lagoon. On the southern side a rough track leads down along part of the lagoon, and in addition to getting a different perspective over the lagoon here you may also encounter Eurasian Stone-curlew, European Bee-eater, Woodchat Shrike and Ophrys orchids in the spring. The 216 hectares of the lagoon are protected as a Natural Reserve, Special Protected Area, and an Internationally Important Wetland site. There’s a car park at the main entrance, a visitor centre in an elevated position good for surveying the lagoon and its birds, toilets and information.

We are visiting this place in august 2023, during summer and after heat wave, there is no water, only a little surface. This is so sad to see the effect of our lifestyle on the nature. The good thinks, we heard the birds all around :)
