Here’s a balanced 3-star (500-word) review of Estadi Johan Cruyff:
⸻
The Estadi Johan Cruyff, located in Sant Joan Despí just outside Barcelona, is a modern football stadium that primarily hosts FC Barcelona B and Barcelona Femení matches. While it is an important part of the club’s sporting project and holds a special place as a tribute to one of the greatest figures in the club’s history, my overall impression was somewhat mixed. It is not a bad stadium by any means, but it does fall short in a few areas, making it a solid 3-star experience rather than an outstanding one.
To begin with, the design of the stadium is neat, compact, and modern. With a capacity of around 6,000 seats, it provides a more intimate matchday experience compared to the massive Camp Nou. This can be a positive for fans who want to feel closer to the action, as every seat offers a clear view of the pitch. The sightlines are excellent, and the general layout makes it easy to follow the game. Additionally, the stadium carries the symbolic name of Johan Cruyff, which adds historical and emotional value for anyone familiar with FC Barcelona’s legacy.
However, while the atmosphere can sometimes be lively, particularly during important women’s matches or big occasions, it often feels quiet and lacking in energy. The small size of the crowd compared to the enormous Camp Nou can make the experience feel less engaging, especially if you are used to the roar of larger stadiums. On a regular matchday, the stands might not be completely full, and this definitely affects the vibe inside the ground.
In terms of facilities, the stadium is clean and modern, but fairly basic. There are food and drink kiosks, but the variety is limited and the prices are slightly on the higher side for what you get. Seating is comfortable enough for short games, but the overall matchday services don’t feel as premium or polished as you might expect from a club of Barcelona’s stature. For example, amenities like parking, accessibility, and entertainment options around the stadium are not as developed as at bigger venues.
One of the challenges is also its location. While it is not extremely far from central Barcelona, it is not as convenient as the Camp Nou for tourists. Reaching the stadium requires either a car or public transport with some walking involved, which can be a bit of a hassle, especially for first-time visitors. There are fewer shops, restaurants, and attractions nearby, so the stadium feels somewhat isolated compared to the vibrant atmosphere around the main city stadium.
Overall, the Estadi Johan Cruyff is a respectable, functional stadium that serves its purpose well for Barcelona B and Femení games. It has a clean design, good views, and an important symbolic role in honoring Cruyff’s legacy. However, the lack of atmosphere, limited facilities, and less convenient location make it more of a decent experience rather than a must-visit. If you are a passionate Barcelona fan or want to support women’s football, it’s worth going once. But for the casual visitor, it is a solid 3-star stadium experience rather than an...
Read moreThe Johan Cruyff Stadium (Estadi Johan Cruyff) is a football stadium located within the Joan Gamper Sports City in Sant Joan Despí, the training center of FC Barcelona.
With a capacity of 6,000 seats, the Johan-Cruyff stadium hosts the matches of the club's women's team which plays in the Spanish Women's Football Championship, but also Barcelona Atlètic, the second team of FC Barcelona which plays in the third division (Primera División RFEF).
The Estadi Johan Cruyff was inaugurated on August 27, 2019 in the presence of president Josep Maria Bartomeu and the family of Johan Cruyff, the emblematic player and coach of the club, who died in 2016. The captains of the men's A team, Leo Messi , Sergi Busquets, Sergi Roberto and Gerard Piqué attend alongside Dutch international Frenkie de Jong, reserve captain Ferran Sarsanedas, captain Marta Torrejón and several La Masía youngsters. A friendly match then takes place between the youth teams of FC Barcelona and Ajax Amsterdam, Cruyff's other club. The match was won by Ajax with a score of 2–0, with Nacir Unuyar scoring twice and the first goal in the stadium.
In the overall project to reorganize FC Barcelona's spaces, it is announced that the old Mini Estadi will soon be demolished to make way for the new, larger Palau Blaugrana. The Johan-Cruyff stadium was designed by studio Batlle i Roig Arquitectes following a competition in 2015 to develop proposals for this new stadium. In March 2017, a year after the death of Johan Cruyff, the future name of the stadium was revealed. On September 14, 2017, the first stone of the stadium was laid. It took a little less than two years to complete the work.
On August 8, 2021, Barcelona hosts Juventus at the Johan Cruyff stadium for the traditional Joan...
Read moreAmazing stadium. I went here for the pre season games of Barcelona and I have to say that every place in the stadium is very good! There aren’t any blocked views where you can’t see the game or what is happening on the field. The only point is the sun which can be quite strong in summer during the day. There are spots where there is no shadows so the sun hits you a lot which can be exhausting. Nevertheless, the facilities are very clean and very...
