We visited Codorniu last week as a family celebration event (group of 13 people). We purchased a package that included the winery visit and a lunch on the same day. The winery visit was simply great: the guide was outstanding and very knowledgeable. The history and information provided were very interesting and overall, the visit was a great experience.
Now let's talk about the lunch: First of all, it is very interesting how when you check the web site they described their menu as a very unique and selective tasting experience. OMG I WAS WRONG! First of all, the restaurant has no air conditioning, not even ceiling fans! It was 100 Degrees (38 celsius) outside and here we are thinking that we are going to have a great family event. All the food was mediocre at best. Their iberico ham was dry which is clearly a sign they had cut it several hours before the meal. The main course was tasteless. But of course the worst was the dessert which was border line insulting since it was a miniature of a cheesecake.
Spain is a fantastic country where you can find some outstanding meals at a very reasonable cost. This place unfortunately is the complete opposite. A complete rip off!
In conclusion, go and visit the winery which you will enjoy. When you are done, go to one of the near by restaurants where you will have a "Menu del Dia" (daily menu) for $15-18 Euros where you will eat better, you will save money and you will enjoy a cooler temperature...
Read moreIncredible experience!! A great day trip when visiting Barcelona you can come by train about 1:30 or a 40 min car drive. Beautiful picturesque town. You get to the beautiful grounds, check in for the tour, which is pleasant. As you walk the grounds they talk about both the property and the cava process then you get taken down to the sellers (both elevators and stairs are options) you get on a small train and drive around the sellers, super unique experience and the tour ends with a cava tasting in a little cottage… After the tour is done you can grab lunch and the restaurant which is located in the owners family original house that is turned into the restaurant, the food was very tasty. Servers and all staff really are very nice and welcoming but honestly the best part of things was at the end once we finished dinner we randomly started a conversation with the chef who actually took us on a tour of the whole house!, went up to the roof top were there was an unbelievable 360 view! The whole area and you could see Monserrat in the background!… as a cherry on top when we decided to head back into the town to grab the train there were no taxis so Jorge our waiter drove us in his own car!...
Read moreWe did not arrange a tour from Barcelona, but booked the winery tour and lunch direct with the winery.
Unfortunately there was engineering works on the line, so we had to get two MRT, two different trains and then a taxi to the winery, our fault but it was well worth it.
There are several tours to choose from depending on what you like, we were very happy with ours.
A great tour explaining the development of the winery, then through the old parts which are now a museum, and then underground through part of 30 km of cellars, and a quality vintage cava tasting to finish.
Then lunch, we stayed too long in the shop, otherwise we would have got a table outside, but never mind. The food and service was wonderful. Way too much food but the quality was first class, with of course some more lovely Cava.
I would highly recommend, while Freixenet is right next to the station, I feel Codorniu was worth the extra effort. Quite a...
