Nestled on a serene hillside just outside Sasamón, the Casa Museo Salaguti is a testament to the visionary artistry of Carlos Salazar Gutiérrez, affectionately known as Salaguti. Born on July 12, 1944, in Sasamón, Salaguti’s journey into the world of art began early. Although he received a grant to study at the prestigious Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, his admission was unexpectedly revoked.
Undeterred, he chose a path of self-guided learning, immersing himself in sculpture conservation and later showcasing his works in galleries across Madrid and Paris.
Ultimately, he returned to his roots in Sasamón, where he embarked on the creation of his most personal masterpiece: his home, studio, and museum all in one.
🏛️ The Architectural Marvel
The Casa Museo is not merely a building; it’s an evolving work of art. Constructed from concrete, stone, and steel, the structure is crowned with a dome featuring a 13-foot-high self-portrait of Salaguti, gazing contemplatively over the landscape. Inside, the two-story circular space is illuminated by a skylight, casting ethereal light upon walls adorned with symbolic artworks and celestial motifs. The interior seamlessly blends sculpture, painting, and architecture, reflecting Salaguti’s belief in the interconnectedness of all elements—terrestrial and cosmic.
🎨 The Artist’s Philosophy
Salaguti’s work transcends traditional artistic boundaries. He envisioned his creations as a personal universe, a sanctuary where he could freely express his innermost thoughts and emotions. In his own words, he sought to “create a little paradise for myself,” a space that harmonizes with nature and the cosmos. His art delves into themes of existence, spirituality, and the human experience, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of introspection and discovery.
👤 A Personal Encounter
Visitors to the Casa Museo often have the rare privilege of meeting Salaguti himself. Known for his warm hospitality, he frequently offers guided tours, sharing insights into his creative process and the stories behind his works. His presence adds a deeply personal touch to the experience, allowing guests to connect with the artist’s vision on a profound level.
🌌 Unbeatable Views
The Casa Museo Salaguti is situated on the Monte de Sasamón, offering panoramic views of the stunning Cantabrian mountain range. The views from this location are unparalleled, providing a serene backdrop for the artist’s creations. On clear nights, the sky is a perfect canvas for stargazing, with the stars clearly visible, making it an unforgettable experience for visitors.
