Monastery of Santa María de la Valldigna — Attraction in Simat de la Valldigna

Admission was free and just from the panorama inside the gates it looked awesome. Founded in the 13th century, this was a very wealthy Cistercian monastery and it lasted until the mid 19th century when laws were passed against monastic holdings and the monastery artworks were sold or plundered. The monastery then became a farm and the buildings declined until the Valencian government bought them in 2003 and began the process of restoration. The first room as you enter has a display of the history of the monastery and the wider political story in the area but this was all in Spanish so we skimmed through it. The gardens were a mix of lavender hedges and orange groves and the main church building had the most incredible interior, polychrome ceiling and the remains of baroque wall paintings. These were quite fantastic to see and most have been mind blowing in their heyday a few hundred years ago. There were several areas we couldn't enter due to the ongoing restoration but the work being done was quite superb. Our first sight of the monastery was from above, driving down from Brax. A spectacular view of it from above , the sun picking it out in the beautiful valley that reaches out to the sea. We were to drive through Simat but just had to stay and take a look at this impressive building. So glad we did. The church within the monastery is breathtaking. We have visited many churches and Cathedrals but this takes the prize. Just couldn't begin to take in the wow. The Monastery must have been amazing to see in its day . Вокруг апельсиновые сады , вид со всех сторон прекрасен, можно подняться на несколько смотровых площадок так и с низу любоваться развалинами Есть зал с дегустацией пива так же
