Ocuri Archaeological Site — Attraction in Ubrique

Amazing! Need to book a timeslot online via their website as this is a guided tour only. This is straightforward. The tour was in Spanish but there are English language tours available. Starting the tour we headed gently uphill, stopping after a few minutes to have an explanation of how the land was used. The tour continued with the gradient increasing gradually until we reached steps and more information regarding the settlement. More steps, information and a walk around the structures before the final ascent to a large flattish area where the main buildings are. Finally, descending to the visitor centre and a film of the site with information on artefacts found. Highly recommended, especially the video at the end, you do need to have a sensible level of fitness (suitable footwear) but the guide is careful to pace the climb and you do have breaks...

Amazing iberan and roman ruins that tell the ancient history of the region.

The experience is great: you can join a 2 hour long guided tour every morning to climb up the area where the old city of Ocuri lays. After a short walk up the mountain, where the necropolis and the old roman pathway are found, you get to an ancient stone wall first built by the iberan people and expanded by the roman people.

Then you get into the rest of the city proper: the baths, the forum and several houses and water wells have been discovered already, but there is an amazing amount of ruins that still lay waiting for their time to see the light again.

All in all, visiting this place brings the oportunity to picture a small bit of the old ages. Acompanied by our kind guide Isabel, the tales both of the ancient times and of how these ruins were discovered are...

Nos ha encantado. María, que es arqueóloga y además fue la guía que nos atendió, es super apasionada por su profesión, esa pasión, que intenta y consigue al final transmitirla a los demás. Una charla muy amena e interesante. Han sido dos horas de divulgación, de aprendizaje y de concienciación que tenemos que tomar sobre este patrimonio cultural que nos legaron nuestros antepasados que habitaron estas tierras muchísimo antes que nosotros y que tenemos que preservar para nuestros descendientes y no olvidarnos de donde venimos. Además de ésto, ha resultado ser un paseo muy agradable por la naturaleza con unas vistas espectaculares de este entorno maravilloso. Este yacimiento arqueológico que lleva pocos años gestionado por el Ayuntamiento de Ubrique tiene un potencial muy alto ya que se ha descubierto relativamente poco comparado con lo que aún queda por descubrirse. Esto significa que habría que destinar una cantidad grande de recursos humanos y materiales para poder sacar a la luz todo lo que hay escondido. A mi parecer creo que el Ayuntamiento de Ubrique debería recibir ayudas de tipo estatal y autonómico, o que sea directamente la Junta de Andalucía la que gestione dotando de más recursos a este enclave arqueológico. El recorrido se hace agradable, como ya dije. Aunque es cuesta arriba, se circula por un sendero pavimentado de losas rústicas, mucha parte del recorrido se hace bajo sombra, además se hacen varias paradas donde María nos instruye sobre los aspectos más importantes del recorrido. Quiero destacar el Mausoleo y las termas, aunque la zona del Foro está casi por descubrir y parecer ser que es la que más patrimonio escondido alberga. Es recomendable visitar Google Maps para comprobar los días de apertura del recinto y demás datos, como la pagina web para hacer la reserva de visita. Yo la hice vía web, aunque se puede hacer por teléfono también. Si no hay reserva para el día que tú quieres, te lo comunican rápidamente. Es preferible así para no hacer un viaje en balde y llegar y no tener hueco. La comunicación conmigo fue muy fluida y lo agradezco. En fin, tanto si estáis cerca de Ubrique, como si no, os recomiendo que concerteis una cita para visitar este sitio aún muy desconocido para mucha gente, pero todo el que va al final...
