Martín is truly an EXCELLENT host. If you want to immerse yourself in rural Cantabrian life while living in absolutely stunning scenery then this is the place for you. The location is remote, about 20 minutes drive from the local town, but Martin has a truck to frequently lift you there to run any errands. The amount of work required is really minimal and unregimented. There is however plently to be done, both indoors and outdoors. Only boring people will get bored here. Most the work involved will be tending to the animals (including taking a deer for daily walks), working in the garden or general cleaning/household maintenance. You can choose some or all of these tasks, as you like. Martín will truly share his life with you if you want to experience Spanish culture at its most authentic. We frequently went for meals out together, went on hikes in the surroundings, met his friends/relatives. As well, we spent much time chatting about philosophy and life while at home during meal times. The location will absolutely knock your socks off, the landscapes are incredible and the weather in the Liebana microclimate is perfect. All the people I came across in the local community are very friendly, welcoming and chatty. If you are a lone traveller (like me), be prepared to spend some time on your own as the village is isolated in some ways. I personally like periods like this and I always kept myself busy by reading, working and generally just getting some good relaxation in. It is something to be aware of however if you need to be surrounded by lots of people each day. Also, Martín also has a very wide selection of books he'll generously share with you, so you won't be short of that...
Read moreI've had the opportunity to experience the Happy Home on several occasions and each visit has been better than the last! Its such a perfect name! Martin is a fenomenal host, so knowledgeable about the area and always willing to do whatever it takes to make my stay memorable. I like to come to spend a few days hiking and getting away from the my busy life to gather my thoughts and reconnect. What I like the most is the magical Silence and the sense of peace! The house affords some spectacular views of the Pico de Europa mountains and there are walking trails where I like to hike in the early morning hours. The food in the area is tasty and fresh and Martin's place is one of the best. Veggies and eggs fresh from the garden and hens, provide for nutritious and delicious meals! Another magical experience, and I don't know if it is offered all year round, was to go watch the sunset from the top of one of the mountains in a well known legend of the area, a sturdy jeep called, the Yeti. Wow! What a fantastic experience that was! The scenery was spectacular and I took hundreds if photos that evening!...for any photography enthusiasts it is a must! If you are interested in experiencing Nature in Spain, at its finest without roughing it and have a comfortable, clean, cozy bed with many amenities I highly recommend the Happy Home. I can't wait for the next time I can get back there. Thank you Martin for creating such a magical, comfortable space...
