The «Monasterio de Santa María de Villanueva de Oscos» was a big surprise for me during a one-day tour through the hinterland of western Asturias. The mighty monastery complex is located right in the center of the village of Villanueva de Oscos. The exterior with a weathered stone facade is dominated by a stately, arched entrance gate with two high pilasters. Above the gate is an elegant balcony that is flanked on either side by two coats of arms, those of Spain and the Cistercian Order. It took us a while to realize that we can just walk in here. The doors are open to everyone. The monastery complex is a ruin. But the volumes are still impressive and the whole thing has something theatrical. Wandering through the empty corridors and halls, I felt a bit like I was on a voyage of discovery. You can clearly see where the floors of the rooms used to be. But now they are gigantic open spaces. During the time of the ecclesiastical confiscations initiated by the then Prime Minister of Spain Juan Álvarez Mendizábal, known in Spanish as «la Desamortización», monastery possessions were expropriated and privatized. That was in the years 1835 to 1837 and meant the end for Spanish monasteries, including here in...
