Monastery of Leyre — Attraction in Yesa

The Monastery of Leyre, in the mountains of northern Navarra, is one of the region's most significant religious and historical sites. Over the centuries, the monastery became closely tied to the Kingdom of Navarra, serving as a pantheon for many of its kings, including the renowned Sancho III.

The crypt of the Monastery of Leyre is an exceptional Romanesque structure built in the 11th century, beneath the choir of the church. It was constructed to compensate for the uneven ground on which the monastery stands.

Its thick columns and vaulted ceiling give it a robust, primitive appearance, compared to the more structurally advanced Gothic architecture of the 13-16th centuries. The simple decoration of the capitals also contrasts with the Greco-Roman influenced capitals that became popular in the following centuries.

The church of the Monastery of Leyre is built with thick walls and rounded arches, typical of Romanesque architecture. Due to the primitive engineering techniques of the time, the church has small windows, compared to the soaring windows of Gothic architecture.

The monastery was founded by Benedictine monks in the 10th century. Today, a small community of monks continues this tradition, emphasizing prayer and hospitality while engaging in agricultural work to sustain the monastery.

The Porta Speciosa (Latin "Beautiful Door") is the main entrance to the Monastery of Leyre, built in the 12th century. It is decorated with intricate Romanesque sculptures depicting biblical scenes such as the Annunciation, the Nativity, and the Last Judgment, and animals such as lions, birds, and dragons.

The Monastery of Leyre is located in a picturesque natural setting surrounded by the Sierra de Leyre mountains and the Yesa Reservoir. The reservoir was used by the monks for irrigating their fields...

La meva experiència és tan sols de l'hostatgeria interna, és a dir, la clausura. Des d'aquest punt de vista, i veient el que fa valorar el Google Maps, faré quatre línies sobre el mateix i altres aspectes.

Habitacions: cadascú té la seva cel•la. Sembla que n:hi ha de dos tipus, una de normal pels que s'hi queden pocs dies, i una teòricament més confortable pels qui s'allotgen més dies. Jo em vaig allotjar a la senzilla. Absolutament res a dir. Cal entendre que s'està en un monestir. La cel•la és austera, certament. No té llit gran ni matalàs i coixí gaire còmodes, però insisteixo que no és un hotel. Té el que ha de tenir per viure l'experiència: un llit, un bany amb dutxa, lavabo i water, un escriptori, i fins i tot una butaca. Disposa de calefacció i mantes addicionals. Auster, sí, però res a objectar.

Servei: res a dir. Tot el monestir és bondat, començant pels monjos. Són homes bons, però bons de veritat. Es preocupen perquè no et falti res i no tinguis cap dubte. No poden ser més atents. Malgrat ser clausura, et sents acompanyat en tot moment.

Ubicació: també perfecte. Tot i que està al costat de l'autovia, es respira calma i tranquil·litat. Crec que està a uns 7 km de l'autovia i poble de Yesa.

Dit això, l'experiència és del tot recomanable. Tens lliure accés a la clausura, claustre, església i capelles. Romànic hi ha l'església i la cripta. La cripta la pot mostrar el pare hostatger. Si es vol fer la visita lliure, cal fer-ho a través de l'oficina de fora i cal pagar. La vida en comunitat també és fantàstica. Compartir oficis amb ells i el mateix espai... S'ha de viure: oficis a la sala capitular, àpats al refectori, cant gregorià a l'església...

En resum, una gran experiència que és millor viure-la...

Sin lugar a dudas, ha sido una experiencia muy agradable. El monasterio cuenta con una ubicación excelente, con vistas extraordinarias y perfecto para desconectar. La habitaciones son acogedoras y la distribución es acertada. Si bien no cuentan con aire acondicionado, nevera, ni televisión, estas no son cosas muy relevantes para mí, ya que sí que cuentan con un ventilador de techo programable. La decoración es muy bonita, lo cual también se aplica a todo el edificio, así como a la zona. De menor agrado ha sido la falta de insonorización, mas esto también puede deberse más a los huéspedes que a la propia estancia. Cabe destacar que finalmente pude descansar muy bien las dos noches que me hospedé aquí, mas es un aspecto a tener en cuenta si, al igual que en mi caso, se es sensible a los ruidos. El monasterio cuenta con servicio de restauración, incorporando desayuno buffet y cena. El desayuno es variado, contando como café, diferentes tipos de leche y pan, embutido, repostería y fruta. Está muy bien, mas no es excesivo como en otros hospedajes. También cuenta con una cafetería junto al monasterio, así como una tienda de recuerdos en la que se pueden adquirir los tickets para entrar al mismo (claro está, no a la zona de clausura). La visita guiada merece la pena y el guía hizo que fuese bastante amena, con notas de humor adecuadas. Sobre todo, se agradece ver que el responsable de la visita siente pasión por lo que hace y conoce mucho al respecto, pudiendo responder muchas dudas y curiosidades.

Todos los recepcionistas han ofrecido un trato adecuado y amable, haciéndonos sentir como en casa. En el caso de que surja la posibilidad, repetiré sin dudarlo....
