Aberdeen Waterfall — Attraction in Central Province

¬Aberdeen Waterfall Having gone through hard times as a result of the country’s serious economic set-back, I made up my mind to go on two-day trip to the upcountry with the intention of breaking the prolong monotony of my life. The Aberdeen Waterfall was uppermost of my holiday basket list as I’m really into enjoying waterfalls. Aberdeen Waterfall lies at Kaluweldeniya in Nuwaraeliya district in the central Province in Sri Lanka. It is about 15km. away from Kithulgala. To get to the waterfall you have to travel about 15km. along a narrow winding road leading to Kaluweldeniya from Kithulgala then you can see the final nameboard at the entrance to the waterfall. Stepping down along the flight of steps about 1km., you can reach the waterfall. The flight of steps running downhill through a thick forest is so steep that it is a bit tiresome hike, but the forest through which the flight of steps lead to the waterfall is full of such wonderful natural scenery that you will definitely be charmed by them. The topmost twisted branches of the towering trees not only create a protective canopy but also provide the passers-by with a favourable atmosphere and old towering trees with the huge roots firmly stand like the mammoth giants giving a majestic look to the environment while the gigantic trees with the peculiar-shaped gnarls, some of which are the habitants of the birds such as woodpeckers and the barbets, expand their branches over. The dried leaves fallen from the trees lay scattered all over the flight of the steps, act as a carpet and make a crushing sound while walking over them. The patches of light all over the forest floor created by the sunlight penetrated through the canopy is a breathtaking sight and the mossy outcrops scattered here and there conjure up the feeling of loneliness. The soft breeze carrying the fragrance of the wild flowers gently blows across the forest waking up the dried leaves lying on the ground. In addition, you can enjoy the occasional cry of the giant squirrels and the continuous chirping sound of the crickets in their hidden natural habitat. Climbing down about one kilometer along the steep flight of steps, you can see the Mother Nature’s wonderful creation—the laughing Beauty Queen—the Aberdeen waterfall. Her journey starts off through a narrow fissure of a towering cliff and rhythmically slithers over the rock wall like a bridal veil waving in the wind and in the end, she gracefully leaps onto a pool of water at the bottom making a cloud of water vapour. I was so captivated by her graceful movement that I gazed at her motionlessly on and on in astonishment and it was really a kind of meditation. I really felt that I’d be mesmerized by her fascinating movement and her soothing laughter. Actually, it was a mind-boggling sight. I am indeed indebted to my loving Mother Nature for gifting this Beauty Queen as I could minimize my acute stress experienced in the hustle and bustle of daily life and loosen up my mind.
