Dunsinane falls The stunning Dunsinane falls, which is also called Pundalu Oya falls is in Pundalu Oya village, Nuwara Eliya district of Sri Lanka. Being the 15th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, with a height of 100 m, the fall cascades in the form of sequential steps to join Pundalu Oya river,  which is a tributary of the Kotmale Oya. About the destination Dunsinane falls lies between two tea estates. One is called Dunsinane estate and the other one is called Sheen estate. As a result, this waterfall was known as Dunsinane-sheen falls (or Dunsinanshin falls). After a certain time, this waterfall was named  ‘Dunsinane Falls.’ The upper part of the fall is 30 meters and it flows through a wide rocky plain. There is a small Hindu Kovil at the left side of the upper falls and a statue has been built at the middle of the rocky plain, which adds a unique beauty to the waterfall. This is the part you can view from the bridge. The 70m lower part cascades down the bridge and there is no proper path to reach the base of the lower segment. If you walk along the road a little further, you can photograph both these parts in a beautiful frame. You can reach the waterfall within one and half hour journey from Nawalapitiya or it’s just a one-hour ride from Nuwara Eliya town. Reaching the destination From Colombo Take Colombo – Kandy road and travel up to Mawanella. Take B279 via Hemmathagama and Ambuluwawa and reach Gampola. From there, take A5 (PBC Highway) and at Thawalanthenna junction, take a right and travel along Tawalanthenna – Thalawakele road (B412). After travelling about 14.5kms, take a left to the road where Dunsinane falls is situated.  Travel another 2.7kms to reach the fall. From Colombo, take Avissawella-Hatton-Nuwara Eliya highway and reach Ginigathhena. Turn left to Nawalapitiya – Ginigathhena road  (B319) and from Nawalapitiya, take Nawalapitiya – Harangala road (B506). Join Harangala- Kalapitiya- Kumbaloluwa road (B148)  and from Kumbaloluwa, turn right to Tawalanthenna- Thalawakele road (B412). From there take a right to the road where Dunsinane falls is situated. From Nuwara Eliya Take A5 (PBC Highway) and reach Pundalu Oya junction. Turn left and travel along the road to reach your destination.

Our visit to Dunsinan Falls as part of a nature restoration project was truly memorable and deeply inspiring. Nestled amid lush forest cover, the falls are a powerful reminder of the beauty and fragility of our natural ecosystems. The sound of rushing water, mist in the air, and the green canopy all around provoked a strong sense of peace and connection to nature. What impressed us most was how well preserved the area is, despite the pressures of human activity. The trails leading to the falls are reasonably maintained—safe enough to access, yet still rustic enough to feel like a true wilderness experience. As part of the project, we were able to see firsthand the importance of restoration efforts: reforestation, removal of invasive species, and conservation of native flora and fauna are clearly making a difference. Facilities are modest but sufficient. There are resting spots and viewpoints that allow you to admire the falls without causing too much disturbance to the environment. The local community involvement is clear—guides and caretakers are knowledgeable, passionate, and eager to share stories about the flora, fauna, and ecological history of the area. Their commitment made our visit all the more meaningful. If you are looking for a place that combines natural beauty, environmental significance, and a chance to contribute (even as a visitor), Dunsinan Falls is worth the trip. It offers a rejuvenating escape, a place for reflection, and a reminder of why conservation matters.

Dunsinane Falls is a beautiful but lesser-known waterfall in Sri Lanka, located in the Pundaluoya area of the Central Province. It is also called Pundalu Oya Falls because it is formed by the Pundalu Oya River, which originates from the Kotmale Oya, a tributary of the Mahaweli River. The waterfall is around 100 meters tall and is divided into two segments, making it a stunning sight. It is surrounded by lush greenery and tea estates, adding to its scenic beauty. The name "Dunsinane" comes from the nearby Dunsinane and Sheen tea estates, which were established during British colonial rule. Interestingly, "Dunsinane" is also a reference to Shakespeare’s Macbeth, where it is the name of a hill in Scotland. Reaching the falls requires some trekking through tea plantations and rough paths, but the journey is worth it. The area is not very crowded, making it a peaceful destination for nature lovers and photographers. However, the water flow can be strong, especially during the rainy season, so visitors should be cautious.

visit srilanka !! this is a beautiful place on of i have been. because this nature is incredible ❤❤ the different weather conditions make heavenly feelings when i visited there. sometimes the mist, sometimes raining, sometimes sunshine, are the best weather conditions i have seen in a single day. if you need to visit here, you have to come to Pundaluoya first. Pundaluoya oya is a small town in Nuwaraeliya district. sinhala, tamil, Muslim these all religions are living in this town. if you start your journey from colombo, you can buy a bus directly to Pundaluoya from colombo fort.but you have to go to CTB bus station, colombo fort. otherwise you will decide to come here by your own vehicle, you have to come peradeniya then, turn to Nuwaraeliya road and when you reach thawalanthenna junction, you have to turn your vehicle to thalawakele road. it takes about almost 6-7 hours. then when you reach Pundaluoya down town and you have to drive about another 500 meters. then you will get a junction and when you turn to the left side, it's directly way to the Dunsinane falls.😊😊😊😊 try the journey. definitely you will get such a wonderful experience. I'm...
