The Knuckles Forest Reserve, also known as the Knuckles Mountain Range, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in central Sri Lanka. This protected area covers approximately 21,500 hectares and is renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and unique ecosystems.

Key Features of Knuckles Forest Reserve:

Biodiversity: The reserve is a hotspot for biodiversity, hosting a variety of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to Sri Lanka. The forest's diverse ecosystems include montane forests, cloud forests, and grasslands. It is home to species such as the Sri Lankan leopard, purple-faced langur, and various species of deer. The reserve is also an important habitat for numerous bird species, including the Sri Lankan blue magpie and the Sri Lankan junglefowl.

Scenic Landscapes: The Knuckles Mountain Range is known for its dramatic and picturesque landscapes. The terrain features rugged mountains, deep valleys, and lush forests. The name "Knuckles" is derived from the distinctive shape of the mountain peaks, which resemble the knuckles of a clenched fist.

Climate and Ecosystems: The climate varies with altitude, ranging from tropical lowlands to temperate highlands. The reserve's ecosystems include rainforests, montane forests, and high-altitude grasslands. This variation supports a wide range of plant and animal life, including several rare and endangered species.

Trekking and Hiking: The reserve offers numerous trekking and hiking trails that allow visitors to explore its diverse landscapes. Popular trails include the ones leading to the summit of the Knuckles Range, which offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. These treks provide opportunities to observe wildlife and experience the beauty of the forest up close.

Conservation Efforts: The Knuckles Forest Reserve is managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Forest Department of Sri Lanka. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the reserve's unique ecosystems, managing human activities, and addressing threats such as illegal logging and poaching.

Cultural Significance: The reserve is also of cultural importance to the local communities. The area has historical and cultural connections with the indigenous Veddha people, who have lived in the region for centuries. Their traditional knowledge and practices are integral to the area's cultural heritage.

Climate and Best Time to Visit: The reserve experiences a tropical climate with significant rainfall throughout the year. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from December to April, when the weather is more favorable for trekking and wildlife observation.

Visiting Knuckles Forest Reserve:

Permits: Visitors need to obtain permits to enter the reserve, which can be arranged through the Department of Wildlife Conservation or local tour operators. Guides: Hiring a local guide is recommended for navigating the trails and enhancing the experience with knowledge about the reserve's flora and fauna. Preparation: Wear appropriate hiking gear and bring essentials such as water, sunscreen, insect repellent, and binoculars. Be prepared for variable weather conditions, especially if visiting during the rainy season.

The Knuckles Mountain Range lies in central Sri Lanka, in the Districts of Matale and Kandy. The range takes its name from a series of recumbent folds and peaks in the west of the massif which resemble the knuckles of clenched fist when viewed from certain locations in the Kandy District. Whilst this name was assigned by early British surveyors, the Sinhalese residents have traditionally referred to the area as Dumbara Kanduvetiya meaning Mist-laden Mountain Range. The higher montane area is often robed in thick layers of cloud. In addition to its aesthetic value, the range is of great scientific interest. It is a climatic microcosm of the rest of Sri Lanka as the conditions of all the climatic zones in the country are exhibited in the massif. At higher elevations there is a series of isolated cloud forests, harbouring a variety of flora and fauna. Although the range constitutes approximately 0.03% of the island's total area, it is home to a significantly higher proportion of the country's biodiversity. The isolated Knuckles range harbours several relict, endemic flora and fauna that are distinct from central massif. More than 34 percent of Sri Lanka's endemic trees, shrubs, and herbs are only found in these forests. Knuckles Conservation Forest was included in UNESCO natural world heritage list in 2010 as part of Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. Knuckles PeaksEdit

There are nine peaks over 1200 meters (4000 ft) in Knuckles Range. The highest peak, "Gombaniya" is 1906 meters (6248 Ft). Highest of knuckle shaped five peaks is at 1864m while Knuckles-Kirigalpotta 1647m (not to be confused with Horton Plains Kirigalpotta, 2nd highest peak of Sri Lanka), Aliyawetunaela 1647m, Dumbanagala 1644m, Yakungegala 1586m, Dothalugala 1575m, Wamarapugala 1559m, Koboneelagala 1555m, Kalupahana (Thunthisgala) 1628m, Rilagala 1605m, Telambugala 1331m, Lakegala 1310m, Maratuwegala 1190m, Balagiriya 1148m, Velangala 1180m , Lahumanagala 1114m, Kinihirigala 1068m, and Lunumadalla 1060m are among the...
