Rangala Natural Pool — Attraction in Central Province

This natural pool at Rangala was popular topic in Social Media at one time in 2017. Dazzling photos of the pool distributed through all social media platforms made it a instant hit that every traveler wanted to visit. Little did they know the dark secrets it held for centuries.

Rangala is small village about 15km off Theldeniya and 40 km off Kandy.  Traveling from Kandy, you could go upto Theldeniya and taking the Werapitiya Road for 15 km will bring you this location. Alternatively you could reach it though Katugasthota – Madawala and Huluganga which is a more picturesque route where you will also come across number of other waterfalls such as Huluganga Ella and Kosgama Ella.

The location of the pool is marked by a small bridge over the Kotaganga, originating from Knuckles mountain range. The pool can be seen just above the bridge. Crystal clear water calmly flowing through two boulders creates this inviting pool. You can also see the bottom covered in pebbles with only few inches of water on the side closer to the bridge. At the far end a small waterfall brings water in to this pool. The danger of this natural pool lies here with a depth reaching over 30 feet.

At least 4 deaths have been reported at this pool after being publicized on social media in 2017. The bodies were stuck so deep, Navy divers had to be utilized to locate and bring the bodies out in some instances. Therefore its strongly advised not to bath in this pool. In addition, the flow of the water can change rapidly based on the rainfall on the catchment regions.

Mind blowing place. Worthy to visit. Please don't pollute the this amazing location. People already doing it. Just take only pictures.don't leave anything.This is a natural pool you should visit and have a dip. The water is crystal clear and super chilling coming through the knuckles mountain range. Have a dip and jump and enjoy the place. Easy access since it is closer to the road. Better avoid weekends because it gets crowded. Don't trash it. Keep the place nice. Be careful with drink and swim.Depth is around 30 feet near the waterfall which claimed many lives. If you want to have a swim or bath, it is better to use the pool downside of the bridge. Knuckles Range Galabadawaththa alias Rangala Natural Pool near Gomara at the western foot of Knuckles Range Rangala Natural Pool, also named after the nearest village, Galabadawaththa, is a beautiful natural pond for bathing and swimming, with several picnic spots along the river known as Kotaganga, which is a tributary of the Huluganga. Immediately above the outlet of the Rangala Natural Pool is a small bridge. The Kotaganga has smooth river banks downstream, that's why the natural pool can best be advanced by walking down to the river on that side of the bridge and then taking the tunnel below the bridge to reach the pool which is framed by steep cliffs on the other three sides.
