At a distance of 2 km from Trincomalee Railway Station, Pathirakali Amman Temple is a Hindu temple situated at the center of Trincomalee town. It is one of the noted pilgrimage places in Trincomalee and among the must-visit places in Trincomalee while holidaying in Sri Lanka. Pathirakali Amman Temple is dedicated to goddess Bhadrakali, the benevolent form of goddess Kali Amman. Along with her, there are idols of Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. The Pathirakali Amman Temple is a part of the temple complex of the ancient Trincomalee Koneswaram Temple compounds. The history of the temple dates back to the Chola kings from the 11th Century, and it has been attracting pilgrims ever since. King Rajendra Chola I expanded the shrine significantly during his reign, an inscription he left detailing this is displayed on the premises. The temple is mentioned in the book Birds of Prey (1997) by Wilbur Smith, set in the 1660s. The temple is built in the classical Dravidian style of architecture which is similar to the temple styles found in South India. The spectacular gopuram of this Kali temple with its vibrant colors and myriad sculptures catches your eye from a distance, while the unique interiors will leave you spellbound. The temple walls are adorned with many beautiful sculptures that are nothing short of excellence. The temple is located just beyond the Konesar Road Esplanade before the entrance to Konamamalai (Swami Rock). Proximal to the ancient Koneswaram Temple, both ancient temples share functions during the Ther Thiruvillah Festival procession and the Back Bay Sea (Theertham Karatkarai). The temple also holds an annual festival which is called the 'Mahotsavam' which lasts for about ten days and ends along with the Chariot festival of the Koneswaram temple. The feast of the Mahotsavam festival usually begins in the third week of March for 15 days where the devotees come and celebrate the feast. The Mahotsavam ends after ten days with the water cutting ceremony will be held in the Back Bay Sea in the eastern port town.

A Hindu temple dedicated to the Goddess Kali, Sri Pathrakali Amman Kovil is one of the most spectacular Hindu temples you will see in Sri Lanka. It’s a large complex of connected shrines located in the Trincomalee. The kovil is very impressive with its colourful look and plenty of stories visualized in the sculptures. Not only does the temple have such an amazing interior design, it is also a place with an interesting history. It’s a marvelous experience for visitors, watching devotees pray for their needs by breaking coconuts in front of the temple. The most unique feature of the temple is that it is brightly painted inside and the outside, which is also very ornate. The unbelievable colorfulness of the temple is truly awe-inspiring. An amazing degree of detail will keep you snapping away. This is a place truly worth your visit.

Woooooooooooow. It's so strange that guides are not talking so much about Trincomalee temples. And this one is one of the best. The works to re-paint the structure are finished 6 month ago (it's 5 July 2017 while I'm writing). It's simply something you have to see if you are around here. Trincomalee is much more than uppuveli and nilaveli beach.

One of the prettiest hindu temples i have yet seen. The details, the colors everything was stunning, and this is just the exterior (it was closed when we were there). You can still enjoy its beauty from the outside and walk around it to marvelat its structure. amazing stop in Trincomalee and definitely recommended to everyone.

Went there by chance during full moon festival. The atmosphere was fantastic - the strange ear-deafening music, the smell from insence and food offerings, the masses of worshippers, all the strange rituals we could not understand. Just don't repeat our mistake and enter with shoes!
