@DEWANAGALA RAJA MAHA VIHARAYA(Sinhala: āļ¯āˇ™āˇ€āļąāļœāļŊ āļģāļĸ āļ¸āˇ„āˇ āˇ€āˇ’āˇ„āˇāļģāļē) is a Buddhist temple situated in the Mawanella area in Kegalle District, Sri Lanka. This site is called Devanagala because it is believed by the folk that this is the place that the deity Dedimunda visited for the second occasion. In the Sinhalese Language, the word Devana means second and Gala means rock. However, another theory suggests that it is so named because it is the second-largest rock in the area after the Bathalegala rock. The history of Devanagala is expanding from the Prehistoric Period to the Kandyan Period. Archaeological evidence dating back to the prehistoric period has been found at the site (Aregama, 2018). The Buddhist temple on the Devanagala rock is believed to be the Dasen Vehera built during the reign of King Dhatusena (460-479 A.D.) of the Anuradhapura Era (Aregama, 2018). However, the Devanagala inscription by King Wimaladharmasooriya I (1592–1604 A.D.) says that the monastery on this rock was founded in 2110 B.E. (1566 A.D.) by a Buddhist monk named Ratanalankara (Ranawella, 2015).

Beautiful temple with a wonderful history. We followed the Google maps location and though there was a path to the top. Locals we met on the temple said that there are two other paths that we can use to reach the summit. Its a very small hike and easy to climb on. view is wonderful you can see the Bathalegala and Alagalla mountaims clearly from the summit and the scenary is so nice. There are few ponds, a dageba, shrine house and some ruins on the summit. Next to the entrance there was a beautiful well besides a paddy field which was so refreshing.

If you're traveling in the (excellent) Mawanella-Hemmathagama road, this is a good pitstop for those who don't mind a small hike/climb and a passion for history. Old temple from the Anuradhapura period with a number of significant artifacts within. And the view from top is magnificent. The hike up the rock is a bit taxing but it's reasonably short. The main starting point is just off the main road (you don't need to turn in to any byroads). You can ask the locals for alternative paths. Mornings or early evenings recommended to avoid the hot rock

(1566 A.D.) by a Buddhist monk named Ratanalankara...
