Handunugoda Estate is the only tea estate situated in the coastal belt of Sri Lanka specializing in the artisanal manufacturing of ‘virgin white tea’ and is one of the handful of estates in Sri Lanka exporting high quality luxury teas to global markets. In this tea factory, you can explore the process of making tea. You have to hire a guide from the tea museum before you walk around the factory area. It's really worth to hire a qualified guide because they are experts about tea and the process. First, we met a guide and then walked to the bungalow which is on the top of the tea estate. At the bungalow, they treated us very well and also had a chance to taste a good tea and tasty cakes. After that, we walked around the whole tea factory and the guide explained everything really well. We saw some very old machines more than 100years old but still works very well. That was an amazing experience. Then we walked into the tea museum and at the tea museum, we had a chance to taste many flavors of tea and also we had a chance to learn more about tea. This is the best place to learn about tea. If you have kids I highly recommended this place for them because they can learn everything about tea and the making process. This place is a kid's friendly place and there're a lot of valuable books you can purchase. There are some really nice handmade crafts and you can purchase them...

We recently visited the Herman Tea Plantation in Handunugoda, and it was a captivating experience. The tour included an in-depth look at the production of both black and green but also white tea. We were especially fascinated by our visit to the black tea factory, where we saw the journey of tea from freshly harvested leaves to finely sorted products.

The plantation's diverse range of teas, enhanced with unique flavors like pepper, hibiscus, and cinnamon from the plantation, was impressive. The tasting session was a highlight, allowing us to savor different teas, including the exquisite Virgin White tea, which stood out as a special treat.

We also appreciated the opportunity to see the tea plant nursery, adding to our understanding of tea cultivation from its very beginning.

The beauty of the plantation, combined with the informative tour and warm hospitality, made our visit truly memorable. For anyone interested in the art and science of tea-making, Herman Tea Plantation Handunugoda is a must-visit...

My Google Review # 000050.

Good insight into Tea Plantation. Expensive Sri Lankan Tea though.

This was a detour visit during our SL vacation. As we dropped out the Whale Watching, we googled this place and asked our cab buddy to take us there.

The plantation is well kept, just like others, as it is a major source of revenue generation in SL.

The plantation tour takes about 45 mins. includes a free tea and cake serving also. After this, they take you through the tea factory, which for me was done in a quite haphazard manner.

Later, as expected, they take you to their main shop where there are about 50 samples kept for tasting. 50! Seriously???? After the entire tour and smells around, I bet your taste bud would not be able to differentiate between more than 3-5 samples.

Anyways, if you are on a long tour in SL, visit the Blue Field Tea factory [between Nuwara and Kandy].... it is much better there. you also get to pluck the leaves and is very decently explained by...

Lovely FREE tour of the tea estate, including a cup of tea and a cake, as well as some tea tasting. The guide told us about tea growing as well as other local plants such as rubber, papaya, coffee, pepper etc. Although there is a chance to buy some tea and other gifts at the shop at the end, we were amazed to find that this was a zero pressure sales environment. We were left to our own devices in the shop (which was slightly out of our budget as students), so ended up just leaving a small donation - which no one asked for or even saw! Would definitely recommend popping in here to check the place out.
