Nakha Vehera is a remarkable yet often overlooked treasure within the ancient city of Anuradhapura, offering visitors a profound glimpse into Sri Lanka’s rich Buddhist heritage. Tucked away in a peaceful corner, this ancient monastery site carries immense historical and spiritual significance.

Believed to date back to the early Anuradhapura period, Nakha Vehera is thought to have been a meditation retreat for monks and ascetics seeking a life of solitude and spiritual discipline. Its name—often associated with the term "nails" or "fingernails"—is thought to reference acts of extreme renunciation practiced by devoted monks, underscoring the deep level of spiritual commitment once observed here.

What makes Nakha Vehera truly special is its quiet dignity. The structure may appear modest compared to the grand stupas nearby, but it embodies a profound sense of history and introspection. The worn stonework, ancient ruins, and tranquil setting serve as a silent testament to centuries of devotion and monastic life.

For history enthusiasts, pilgrims, and anyone seeking a more contemplative corner of Anuradhapura, Nakha Vehera offers a unique and enriching experience. It is a site where time seems to pause, inviting you to reflect on the enduring legacy of spiritual dedication that defines Sri Lanka’s...

Nakha Vehera ( Naka Vehera) of Anuradhapura is one of the hidden gems which is rarely visited in Anuradhapura. There are 4 known square shaped stupa’s in Sri Lanka. The most popular is the Sathmahal Prasadaya of Polonnaruwa kingdom built during 11th -13th century. The rest of the 3 stupas can be found in the ancient Anuradhapura kingdom which are rarely visited by the pilgrims. One of these stupa’s is Nakha Vehera. The other 2 belongs to the Abhayagiriya Monastic Complex. One of them is known as Indikatu Seya (aka Prasada Stupa). The other lies west of Eth Pokuna on the western border of the...

The Nakha Vehera belongs to the Mahayana tradition and constructed during 7-10th centuries (late late Anuradhapura era). The square shape Sthupa is one of the four square shaped dagoba in Sri Lanka and would have been similar to the Satmahal Prasadaya in Polonnaruwa. Ruins of several other buildings are visibled in the close vicinity and needs more attention of the relevant authorities.
