Bambarakanda Waterfall which is the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka is situated in Kalupahana in Badulla District. The waterfall is about 5Km away from A4 Highway. It is formed by Kuda Oya which is a tributary of Walawe River. This is one of the major tourists attractions in SriLanka.I got to visit this waterfall with my family. The location of this beautiful waterfall is actually breath-taking. To access the waterfall, we have to take the Kalupahana-Ohiya road which is a narrow winding bumpy road to lead to the uphill. The forest canopy over actually provides a refreshing feeling. It is about 5km away from the main road. The foot path leading to the waterfall from this road lies through a shady pine forest. It is about twenty-minute walk to the waterfall. We did not make much effort to walk in this foot path because the flight of steps are available up to the uphill. In the early hours in the morning, the whole area does not fall short of the scenic beauties. The mountain peaks covered with mist create a very interesting impressions in the mind of the visitors. The scene becomes more attractive when the clouds roll over spasmodically. The chirping sound of the small insects and the rhythmical singing of the birds in the bushes refresh our minds. When we reach the waterfall, we can hear the burble of the flowing water in the waterfall and just as we get closer we hear the roaring sound of the waterfall. Oh! It is awesome. At once we were charmed by the way of the rhythmical cascading of the water sliding along the huge upright rock and fall into a deep pool of water at the bottom. The natural water shower caused by the water-drops created a fantastic sight. We took a rest at the waterfall and enjoyed as much as possible. It is a marvelous experience. I think it is worth visiting this wonderful waterfall in your life time.

This road is very narrow, washed away and full of pot holes. A four wheel drive is recommended though a van with a high ground clearance could get there. The base of the fall is few hundred meters from the road, and no clear path is available to reach there. From Kalupahana take the road to Ohiya through Bambarakanda falls. Bambarakanda waterfall is a must-visit destination when you visit Sri Lanka, not only because it’s the tallest waterfall in the country. The surrounding area offers many waterfalls to see, several mountain treks and 4-wheel tracks through the mountain terrains as well as mesmerizing mountain views like nowhere else in the country. The fall is situated 5kms away from the main road and you must travel upwards a narrow and winding road to meet this beauty. Though the fall is visible to the road, to get close, you need to walk along a pine forest patch to reach the base. You will find a ticket counter on the road, which is the access route to the waterfall, and you have pay at entrance ticket and some items like camping tents are not allowed to take. The path is well-maintained with stairs and it’s a quiet easy trek. After about 15 minutes, you can reach the base of the waterfall and when you do, there’s a sitting area near the waterfall where you can have the best view of the waterfall from there. You can also take a hike to the top of the waterfall through the pine forest and it will take about 1.5 hours, covering 1.6kms. The best period for such a hike in April to September, where the waterfall is not too dry as well as not harsh due to the gushing water flow. If you’re doing this hike, don’t forget to visit Lanka Ella, another magnificent waterfall situated in the jungle, close to Bambarakanda falls. It is a wonderful experience to take a bath in the cold base pool since it’s a safe place. The waterfall and the surrounding area is a great place for photography as well.
