The foot of the Diyaluma Falls is located 1-hour away from Ella. This 220-meter high waterfall is the 2nd highest waterfall of Sri Lanka, has different levels and natural pools on the top. Water coming down with great force on the rocks is amazing to experience on the foot but exploring the top is new and you need to be a fit to reach this. You can visit this in 3 hours or need a full day depending if you want to visit the top.
The foot of the Diyaluma falls is quite easy to reach within an hour by tuk-tuk, car or motorbike. The last 15 minutes of the drive will be uphill and the road isn’t the best from that point. At the foot of the waterfall, pass the bridge and follow the path to the waterfall.
Once you have explored the foot, follow the road to Koslanda town. Make a sharp turn right and follow the road for another 15 minutes. Drive another 15 minutes once you reach a split, turn to the right until here (see map) and let the locals guide you where you should park your vehicle.
From the tiny car park place, ask a local to guide you to the waterfall. There are a 2-hour and a 40 minutes hike. The 40-minute walk is beautiful through long grass, there is no real marked path and the views are out of this world.
Swimming at Diyaluma Falls
Once you reach the first part of the waterfall, you will face a series of natural pools where you can take a swim, and even jump from one pool into a lower leveled pool. (We still can’t get over that nature created this waterpark).
Walk further down and you will face a 220-meter + drop with again, natural pools, even on the edge! It is possible to dip in the one near the edge but be extra careful. It’s better to just take a look over the edge of one of the highest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and see the bridge where you started.
Take enough water and food because you can easily spend the whole day on top of this incredible waterfall. The area offers enough shade areas and friendly young locals are hanging around here as well.
Make sure to add the Diyaluma Falls to your Sri Lanka Route!
Tip: Always check the weather forecast a day before. It’s not recommended to go here during the rainy season (Oct, Nov) or on a rainy day.

To go to the top can access from the bottom by taking a small road that is on the right hand side about 1.5km past Diyaluma Falls if you are coming from Wellawaya. There you can drive up to a large parking area and then with or without a guide you can hike up.
Most of the guides' wives have small restaurants so you can order food for the end of the hike when you come down. The food is reasonable and very tasty.
For the hike you should have closed hiking shoes or at least sneakers. During the rainy season there are leaches so best have on pants or tights.
The hike is a good one but not too hard. We did with small kids. But it is a hike and those with limited mobility will not make it. Best go from top if you have knee issues.
From the bottom you get to the top of the falls first and then if you like you can hike up further and find many nice swim areas and also places to jump.. The highest is about 12 meters and you also have small ones or 1 or 2 meters that are safe and fun.
There is a place for tea, rothi and king coconut near the main picture taking area.
You can also get to same place but from the top down, by going past Koslanda and turning in the town on a sharp hairpin to the right. After about 3 km of driving up you will come to a small tea picking town. There you can park and hike down.
There are guides as well and it can be good to take one.
We have also tried hiking from top all the way down.. Which was fun.. But then you need to take a tuk all the way back up if you left your vehicle there.
Best do earlier in the day.
Also please be warned if it starts raining heavily DO NOT GO as the whole mountain's rain comes down from that Waterfall. It becomes very dangerous.
Please do not leave garbage.. Respect the...
Read moreExperience the best of nature and adventure, trekking to the upper Diyaluma falls, the 2nd highest waterfall in the country. The latest thrill of Sri Lanka, it is an enthralling and challenging hike atop a 220 metre waterfall comprising several natural pools surrounded by dense jungles and landscapes of resplendent wilderness unfolding along the way. There are two trail routes which include one that comes to the top of the falls from above or from the base of the waterfall. Coming from above would require starting from Poonagala road, going downhill through tall grasslands with a faintly marked path. This hike would take approximately 30 minutes to reach the top of Diyaluma falls, where there are several natural rock pools towards the edge of the precipice. Once the falls reach the edge, it cascades into one last pool before gushing down 220 metres into the large base pool below. From this point, you hike up to the upper falls which is a further 15 minutes and along the way you would find more pools, especially towards the edge of the upper Diyaluma falls, you would come upon a spot worthy of a daring jump into the cool waters of the pool underneath. Upon reaching the top, you would be spellbound with stunning views of mountains and lush greenery. Getting out of here would require a hike down the hill, passing through a quaint village of Koslanda which has a rubber estate, in which you could notice the entire process from rubber collection from the trees to the final product that are hung around to dry. Once you come out of the village, you will be back where you had started and you could choose to go to the base of the waterfalls for one last dip or one last photograph to seal your memories of this excursion to...
