Nestled in the vicinity of Ella, this cave holds a special place in the island's cultural and historical tapestry, drawing visitors with its mystical aura and the tales that surround it. According to local folklore, Ravana's Cave is associated with the legendary King Ravana, a central character in the ancient Indian epic Ramayana. King Ravana is said to have been a powerful and enigmatic ruler, and the cave is believed to be one of his hideouts during the time of the Ramayana. The cave's connection to this mythological narrative adds an intriguing layer to its natural beauty, making it more than just a geological formation. The cave itself is an imposing cleft in the rock, situated on the Ella-Wellawaya Road. Accessible via a trek through the lush, verdant landscape, the journey to Ravana's Cave is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself. The trek offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills, tea plantations, and the cascading Ravana Ella Falls, creating a picturesque backdrop that enhances the allure of the cave. Upon reaching the cave, visitors are greeted by a sizable opening in the rock, revealing a cavernous space within. In a world replete with the mundane and the predictable, a daring soul must occasionally veer off the beaten path to unearth the very essence of adventure. My latest escapade led me to the mystical Ravan Cave, tucked away like an ancient secret, whispering its tales of yore amidst the resplendent mountains near Ella. To reach this hallowed sanctuary, one must traverse a path that would put Hercules to shame. Braving the treacherous terrain, I embarked on an arduous journey where each step was a testament to human resilience, and each breath a reminder of the beauty that lay ahead. As I climbed higher and higher, the world unfurled before me like a canvas painted by the gods themselves. The verdant mountains rose majestically, their peaks scraping the heavens, while the valleys sank into the abyss, concealing untold mysteries. It was as if nature itself had conspired to create the perfect backdrop for the Ravan Cave, an enigma that enticed explorers with promises of untold wisdom. Upon entering the hallowed chamber, I was immediately struck by the palpable aura of antiquity. A thousand tales echoed through the cavernous walls, ancient whispers of battles fought and loves lost, of heroes born and civilizations crumbled. Time stood still within this sacred space, a refuge from the relentless march of progress that threatened to devour the world outside. In the embrace of Ravan Cave, I found solace and inspiration, a reminder that even in our fast-paced, digitized existence, there still lingered places where the echoes of the past resonated with the present. This archeological treasure, nestled in the bosom of nature, offered an unrivaled communion with the elements, and the opportunity to reflect on our very being. For those bold enough to brave the difficult path, the Ravan Cave awaits, a testament to the indomitable spirit of adventure and the eternal allure of the unknown. I beseech thee, fellow seekers of wisdom and beauty, to embark on this pilgrimage to the cradle of history. You shall emerge, as I did, forever transformed.

A popular tourist destination is the Ravana Cave, also known as the Ravana Ella Cave. It is located in the Ella village. According to mythology, the cave is where King Ravana, a major figure in the Ramayana, went to hide. It is also thought to have served as a temporary abode for King Ravana during his exile. The cave is perched on a rock wall and provides stunning views of the surrounding area. Visitors can explore the Ravana Cave's chambers and corridors, which are illuminated with artificial lights. The cave's natural beauty is enhanced by diverse rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites. To get to the cave, travelers must hike or climb 650 stairs to the entrance. The journey can be physically difficult, but the breathtaking scenery makes it worthwhile. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil environment and the breathtaking surroundings once inside. It's especially difficult with the rain because so many insects come your way. Be extremely cautious with snakes and leeches. that appear unexpectedly on your feet. Furthermore, to avoid mosquito bites, it is best to wear shoes alone. Even while ascending, be mindful of your steps because the rock steps are in such good condition that they can harm your feet. It is likewise not recommended to go in the evening. as climbing will take a long time. And the atmosphere deteriorates in the evening when it is dark and pouring. Carry a lamp if you intend to visit in the evening. You may also come across the company of dogs. which is lovely and cute. Who among the tourists desires food? Overall, the location was lovely and charming.

So the hike up the cave was really nice and short, it’s really interesting to get to see and learn the history behind it but I’m giving 2 stars because of the “monks” there that as a foreign tourist watch out for. There were specifically 2 monks that walked us around the temple and were “nice”, because of that we donated to the temple box some money…. One of the monks in a private place whispers to us to give him euro, we told him that we don’t have none and that we put some money in the temples donation box and he tells us that were from europe, we should have euro and money. We told him no once again and thanked and started leaving, he then kept talking about us giving him money either way and his hospitality towards us changed. So we left and on the way out there sat some other dudes and laughed with the monks behind our backs. As an atheist that wants to learn more about other peoples religion I decided to google if monks can ask, accept or demand money from people and it said no, so I hardly believe that these monks were even real. Don’t get me wrong though, I really hope that the other monks are real, but these 2 and the one that demanded money from us were sketchy (the one demanding money had a brighter orange robe compared to the other monks).

The Ravana cave consists of a part of the tunnel which is connected to the Ravana Falls in Ella. Tales say that King Rama of India had a beautiful wife, Queen Sita. He kidnapped Queen Sita, brought her to Sri Lanka and hide her in these caves. The tunnels served as a quick way of transportation through the hills and also as a secret passage. They connect with all the important cities, airports and dairy farms in Sri Lanka. A closer look at these tunnels indicates that they are man-made and not just natural formations. The architectural details of these tunnels prove the brilliant way of building of King Ravana. Once you have conquered the 650 steps, you’ll arrive at the historical Ravana Cave. The cave itself is pretty small, just to make your expectations realistic. You are allowed to go inside of the cave for only 200 meters. After those 200 meters there is a big stone that has been kept by the Government prohibiting people from going further inside. The view from the cave is impressive and if you like history and a little adventure, this is a great thing to do in Ella!

The village is at the foot of the mountain, 2 km from the village of Ella and you can go down it. From then on you were from the area. - This way? They will also answer, There is a small closed gate and a note called permission.
