This factory was recommended to me and my boyfriend by multiple locals as the best factory for a tea factory tour that there is. I really enjoyed the visit. The tour was done by a guy working at the factory that is clearly an expert in tea. He explained to us the different types of tea at Sri Lanka, how is the tea processed in general, how does it work on market with tea and we had also tour through the factory. At the end of the tour, there was a small tea tasting. The is helps a person to understand different types and choose which tea do they want to buy, if they consider that. The whole tour lasts about 1 hour. Mind in advance that the processes for tea processing don't run every day and that you might be as unlucky as we were - we didn't see tea itself to be processed. But then, we were also told that it's much quieter like that and that people can at least hear each other while walking with the tour guide through the factory. Prices at tea shop are high - typical touristic ones. But this is expected. On the good side, we wanted to buy something local as presents for our friends. A lady from staff working at the place warned us that some products that we are going to buy are from another tea factory. So we didn't take those products and chose something different instead.

For me was visiting a tea factory a ‘must do’ in Sri Lanka. My host in Ella recommended me this factory. For buying tickets, you have to go upstairs, in the store, you follow the “visitors” signs. For that you have to walk through the factory, even there’s no worker to guide you. We arrived at the ticket counter, we wanted more infos, like... how much does is cost, is a tee-tasting included, do we see only the equipments or is there production on the lines? The lady answered very rude and she was bothered by our questions. Answers to my questions: -price per person 525Rps -tea tasting included -If you re lucky and there is production on the line when you re visiting it, you can see the production process, if not you can see only the equipments. In our group were like 30 people. First we went in a lecture room. Here were introduced to us theoretical elements about the tea and the manufacturing process. It was really interesting! Still, it was pretty hard for me to understand what the guide was saying, because of his accent. After that we visited each department in the factory and at the end we came back in the store where we could taste different sorts of tea and buy tea for home. And I don’t know how the food legislation is in Asia, but some stuffs like everyone touching the tea without gloves and then throwing it back on the production line or workers who are using their feets to press the tea are hard to believe for me 😂 And everywhere is big written that they have HACCP / ISO 22000 implemented...

We had the pleasure of touring the Ella Sri Lanka Tea Factory, and it was an unforgettable experience, thanks in large part to Siva, who served as both our guide and host. As an engineer and manager at the factory, Siva brought a wealth of knowledge and passion to the tour. He took the time to explain every step of the tea production process in detail, making it both educational and engaging. Beyond just the mechanics of tea manufacturing, Siva shared insights into the rich history and cultural importance of tea in Sri Lanka. His explanations were clear and fascinating, helping us appreciate the deep roots and global impact of Sri Lankan tea. The tour concluded with a tea tasting, where we sampled several varieties produced right at the factory. It was a perfect ending to a thoroughly enjoyable and informative visit. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Ella, don’t miss this experience, and if you’re lucky, Siva will be your guide!

I had the best time on the Halpe tea tour, especially the handmade tea masterclass. It was a rainy day, and honestly, getting rained in turned out to be a blessing. Huge shoutout to Parami—her enthusiasm made the whole experience super fun and easy to follow. I've been on my fair share of factory tours that felt a bit surface-level, so I was really impressed by how detailed and high-quality this one was. Parami was so patient, answering all our random questions and explaining everything in depth. Plus, she’s an awesome photographer and videographer, capturing great moments for us. You could really feel her personal touch throughout the tour, which made it all the more special and memorable for us both. We went home with our own handpicked and handmade tea and I’m pleasantly surprised how delicious they taste. Best souvenir ever. Thank you for the wonderful memories.
