I visited St. Sebastian’s Church in Negombo during a very difficult time in my life, when I was under immense stress and battling deep depression. Though I belong to a different religion, something drew me toward this beautiful place of worship.

The moment I stepped inside the church, I felt an unexplainable sense of peace and divinity. I sat there for a long time, quietly letting my emotions pour out. I cried — not out of weakness, but in release. As the tears flowed, I could feel a weight lifting off my shoulders. It was as if the presence of God was silently speaking to me, comforting me, assuring me that I was not alone.

By the time I left, I felt light-headed — not in pain or confusion, but in relief. It was like a burden had been taken off me. My confidence returned, and my heart felt lighter. I truly believe I received a blessing that day. There is something powerful and sacred within the walls of this church that words can’t quite capture.

I visited St. Sebastian’s Church on Sea Street recently and was truly impressed. The church’s striking neo‑Gothic architecture—modeled on France’s Reims Cathedral—is even more breathtaking up close, with its twin spires and graceful arches .

Inside, it’s peaceful and reverent, with life-sized Stations of the Cross set among the courtyard gardens—perfect for quiet reflection. the atmosphere was serene and prayerful, though fans provided only occasional relief from the tropical warmth.

The grounds were beautifully well-maintained, and there’s genuine warmth from both parishioners and visitors. If you come in January, you might catch the celebrations for the Feast of St. Sebastian, which include colorful flags, a lively procession, and free meals for the community—a true expression of local tradition and generosity .

This church is not just a scenic landmark—it’s a central part of Negombo’s identity and spiritual life. It also carries a poignant history from the 2019 Easter attacks, yet today stands as a symbol of resilience...

Католическая церковь Святого Себастьяна в Негомбо выглядит так, будто это какой-то кадр из сказки.

Высокие шпили, красочные фрески, по вечерам здесь идёт служба, поёт хор, люди стоят на коленях, произнося молитвы.

Посвящена она святому Себастьяну - одному из самых известных католических святых. Почитают его как мученика, который не предал свою веру и принял смерть во имя Христа. С конца 14 века, после эпидемии чумы, которая поразила всю Европу, — и как защитника от этой болез­ни. Чаще всего к нему обращаются за исцелением.

Изображается Себастьян обычно привязанным к дереву верёвками и пронзённым стрелами. Это, кстати, единственный образ в истории христианства, изображённый настолько обнажённым - на нём только набедренная повязка.

Церковь я посетить рекомендую. Очень красиво. В отзывах я часто натыкалась на инфу о терракте, но дело в том, что он произошел не здесь, а в церкви святого Себастьяна, которая поменьше. В апреле 2019 г, на Пасху, исламистской организацией Таухит Джамаат именно здесь была заложена бомба, в тот день в Негомбо погибло 320 человек.

Ту церковь восстановили, она снова красива, люди по-прежнему ходят туда молиться, а это значит, что отчасти зло побеждено. А я в очередной раз убеждаюсь в том, что практически всегда за красотой стоит какая-то печальная история.
