Birka is a unique place worth visiting, especially if you live in Sweden. The two-hour boat (Strömma) ride takes you through the beautiful archipelago, and onboard there are maps, snacks, and even small games and puzzles for kids.

You will have about 3 hours to explore the island (so try to plan your visit in advance - you can do it on your way) Once on the island, you’ll find a small Viking village, a museum about Viking history, guided tour where you can see the traces of what used to be Sweden’s very first city — now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There’s not much left to see physically, but with a bit of imagination, it’s easy to picture how it once was. On colder or rainy days, it’s even easier to feel like a Viking 😀

There’s also a small herb garden, goats and chickens, a surprisingly good restaurant, and even glamping in summer!

Tip: Try to visit during a festival or event – it adds so much to the atmosphere and makes the trip...

Absolut...

Amazing place full of atmosphere, I recommend going in late summer as there will not be alot of people there than, the only way to the Island is by boat/ferry which is a breathtaking view of Mälaren. The restaurant has excellent food and a lovely view if you sit outside. I've done a DNA test and have 2 ancestors (high ranking shield maidens)that lived and died on Birka. If you have time you can even take a trip to Ekerö where Björn Ironside is buried, basically right across from Birka. Mycket trevligt, ett måste att ser!
