During our emigrants museum tour we discovered it was illegal to immigrate from Sweden until 1840. Learning about the immigrants method of travel which required eight weeks to navigate across the Altantic. Another public education until 1842. This is a historic location and this Peter Castle and his family of 21 sailed and traveled by sailing ship in May and reached their destination, IA in October when it was still just a territory. They settled a place called, New Sweden with 38 people and with letters back home the population grew to over 700 people and built a Lutheran Church, which is all that remains. Then other settlers built other churches such as a Methodist, and a Baptist too.
Many other younger men, moved away to find wives and settled by the Homestead Act elsewhere.
