Read moreThere is a mine tour you can get tickets for at Folkets Hus or online. The bus leaves from Folkets Hus and drives you into the visitors' mine. We had a very knowledgeable tour guide and host, Gunbritt, who did an impressive one-woman-show for the whole tour - giving us information, preparing coffee and cookies, leading us through the mine. You learn about the history of the mine, the relationship between LKAB and the town of Kiruna, and how mining is done today. You get to see some machines and understand (superficially) how they work. :-) You will never forget that they blast in the mine at 1:30am every night. And it's amazing how the whole town centre of Kiruna will have to be moved because of the risk of collapse of the land due to the mining. Read moreBe aware this place is a tourist trap: very expensive activities which leave a lot to the imagination. Unfortunately our activities were poorly organized and it was almost imbarassing to be in those as you could see that the guides are not trained.
Do not come here in general, but especially not by train - our train was 15 hours delayed and at our arrival it was impossible to get a transfer as the hotel wasn’t answering, taxis neither (after midnight). We were lucky enough to meet a kind man who drove us otherwise we would have been out in the night at -20.
It’s just a place that attracts tourist because it’s so far out and it looks like you can experience the traditional life here but it’s only a fake image of it, that you need to pay a lot of money for. ( 20 min taxi is 60 euro...
