Like the name suggests. A nugget of local history. Old Linkoping is located next to Valla Forrest nature reserve with trails enabling walks to Tinnerö nature reserve in the south. Old Linkoping is the place to bring a bottle or two of wine and day drink while soaking in a neighborhood from early 1900. The location is primarily aimed at showcasing historic buildings, less on restaurants, more on haberdashery, some locally produced, and cafes, surprising for its 0.5 million visitors per year. The neighborhood reminds of Astrid Lindgren's world in Vimmerby and its activities seem mostly aimed at children and those parents who are either patient or unwillingly sober.
A chocolate factory is marketed however I found no visible difference between its offering and a local 7/11. Back in the day the offering used to include excessive stock, innovative failures or faulty product which in itself was a reason to visit Old Linkoping.
If one would like to interact with a historian there is a council maintained example of what a Swedish soldier was awarded for their services back in the day, half a click south of the roofed dance platform. The four rust red buildings host a knowledgeable local who shares information of the past traditions and customs, not limited to Linkoping. Our particular conversation led to the lack of documenting underground storage space to makeshift an old-school fridge in the Nordic countries while similar farmer communities in central Europe displayed such traits. Lovely.
Old Linkoping is a suitable place to purchase handmade and/or gifts while strolling through well maintained aged buildings. The existence of this neighborhood is the result of lifting and shifting buildings from the local area and merging them for the purpose of...
Read moreAbsolutely my new favourite open air museum in Sweden now
The rain has just stopped when we arrived in Gamla Linköping. It was my partner who brought me there and honestly, I thought it was just like all open air museums. We arrived a little after 15:00 and the indoor areas are closed at 17:00 (not the place as people can still walk around it after 17:00 of course). We only managed to visit the Stadsgården and bit of the middle area (Ryttartorpet) leading to the forest. But in the short time we have been there, we were particularly impressed with the bank museum (the mute movie depicting bank history was fabulous idea. No need to have any staff inside since there are large information everywhere), the staff who role paly and bring us back to the old times by showing us how it was to be a working class family, soldier's wife's responsibility in the household, how to wash clothes before all modern appliances, the old variety store where you can buy, flour, sill, groceries, shoes, buttons, gift items, etc. There is a huge house near the parking which offer guided tours which we unfortunately missed.
Good to know there is a bed and breakfast in Gamla Linköping since we do intend to come back another summer and experience more from this lovely, well-maintained open air museum. The management and whole staff are very good in offering both Linköping residents and visitors a wonderful...

This place is a step back in time. I actually felt like I was living in the year 1600 but the most fascinating thing about this place wasn’t just the locals But the friendliness each person portrayed and the stories. Everyone could tell all the most fascinating things I found out was why all the buildings were in orangey Brown and the lolly shop at the end was wonderful to be able to step off the main street in the year 2025 and walk through a town where it felt like I was in the year 1603 was one of the most amazing feelings.
