We recently visited a beautifully reconstructed early and late Middle Ages castle, and it was a fantastic experience for both adults and kids! The castle has been thoughtfully rebuilt to provide a realistic impression of Swedish life during these historical periods. It features example buildings from each era, giving visitors a tangible sense of how people lived throughout the castle’s history.
For children, there are a variety of engaging activities that really bring the Middle Ages to life. Our kids had a blast baking bread in the traditional medieval style, playing several historically inspired games, and braiding bracelets from cotton thread. These hands-on experiences made the visit both educational and fun for the little ones.
The entrance fees are quite reasonable, with tickets priced at 10€ for adults and 7€ for children. Given the quality of the experience and the range of activities available, we found this to be well worth the cost.
Overall, this castle is a must-visit for anyone interested in history or looking for an enjoyable family outing. We highly...
Read morehistorical fortress on southern Öland built close to what was then the coast. This was a lookout for marauders (silly Norwegian Vikings!) and in the event of an attack, the villagers in the surrounding area would bring family and livestock into the fortress. The fortress went unused for several hundreds of years and then was revived in the middle ages, again against attack and plague. The recreated village inside is set up to represent both eras, one on either side. Simply fascinating to walk through and see the type of workmanship our forefathers could put together. The fortress is approximately 20 feet thick at the base and narrows to about 6 feet on top with a walkway to attack from above. The wall is stepped to...
Read moreUnfortunately we found the site to be rather lacklustre. Not the fort itself, but more the experience. Online it made it seem like there was a museum with thousands of artefacts uncovered relating to the settlement, but the museum wasn’t really a museum, mostly for children with no artefacts. I think we paid 75kr for entry, not realising it seems like you can just walk in? We probably spent no more than 20-30 minutes walking around. Would have been nice if there was an actual museum with actual artefacts dating back to this time period, as it seems there were a lot found in the excavations. Would not recommend, felt...
