Very interesting place. From one day to another, a large lake and waterfall just disappeared and never came back. A night in the end of the 18th century, just for a few hours, the water masses rushed down and brought everything along… the landscape and life nearby changed overnight. Here you can learn about the history as well as have the opportunity to see how the bottom of many rivers in Sweden might look like. Also get a broader understanding of nature. Large parkings. Cafe as well as an exhibition onsite. 800 meters boardwalk around the area. Wheelchair accessible as well. Cellphone...

Nice walking path across the dry rapids. The path of the waterfall was changed by a snafued engineering endeavor in 1796 - the lake above the fall was drained in 4 hours, 1 billion cubic meters flushed the valley below in a tsunami fashion. Incredibly noone was killed since all billages downstream were siuated at higher altitudes and the catastrophe took place in the middle of the night. However, many people died when the newly created riverbanks caved...

Zodra je de informatieve borden leest en begint te begrijpen wat er zich op 6 juni 1796 heeft afgespeeld, word je vanzelf stil. Wat hier gebeurde, was de grootste natuurramp in de Zweedse geschiedenis — en ze was door de mens veroorzaakt. Bij het aanleggen van een kanaal ter hoogte van het Ragundameer onderschatte men de geologische risico’s. De bodem kon het gewicht van het water niet aan en begaf het, waardoor het meer leegliep alsof iemand de stop uit een badkuip trok. Een allesverzengende vloedgolf overspoelde de omliggende boerderijen en velden. Eeuwenlang werd dit gebied gekenmerkt door de wilde stroomversnellingen van de Indalsälven en de indrukwekkende Storforsen-waterval van 35 meter hoog. Maar in de nacht van 6 op 7 juni 1796 was het meer binnen vier uur volledig verdwenen, en daarmee ook de waterval — die hield simpelweg op te bestaan. Vandaag wandel je hier letterlijk tussen de rotsen waar ooit het kolkende water naar...
