Underslös Museum is the museum to visit for detailed, accurate information on the content and interpretation of Scandinavian rock art and the prehistoric art of Tanum and its surrounding parishes. During hours of opening, free guided tours, conducted by highly knowledgeable experts, who are all volunteers, working at this rock art research centre and museum are offered. Visitors also have the opportunity to browse the exhibition independently and ask any questions they may have. Languages spoken include, but are not limited to: Swedish, Danish, Dutch, German and English.
The Museum, for a fee (enquire at the museum for details), offers night excursions to some of the most beautiful unpainted rock art panels in Bohuslän, which are lit at night with artificial light to reveal the beauty of the carvings.
Special attention should be drawn in this review to the research activities of the museum that the public are able to participate in. Those particularly interested in rock art can , as volunteers for a fee, participate in a week long working seminar, held every year during week 30, to participate in the museum's ongoing work to re-document the rock art of the area in a through and professional manner, under expert guidance. The seminar also includes a full programme of lectures, given by leaders in the field of rock art research, and excursions during daylight and night time to selected key sites.
A visitor will be struck by the work of the museum, that has an international outlook that extends far beyond the Tanum region and the rest of Sweden. Significant foci include, but are not limited to: Denmark, Norway, Italy and Germany. The museum has, and continues to be, a key partner within large-scale EU projects and has connections and interests encompassing the entire globe.
Those with a burning lust to find out more about Scandinavian rock art, should make this a 'must visit' location. 'Worth a journey' - as they would say in the Michelin guide!

Read moreSituated in the beautiful, serene landscape of Bohuslan, the museum offers a fantastic overview of the regions rock art. The people you will meet at the museum are active researchers in the field and are more than willing to answer your questions. When I was there I heard Dutch, German, and English being used to guide people through the exhibits! Quite impressive for a small Swedish museum! The museum provides a glimpse into the documentation process used as a means to preserve the images for future generations. I also noticed what seemed to be a substantial library on rock art off the entrance with a number of young researchers using it.
Although it is off the beaten track just a bit, it is well...
Read moreWe we’re welcomed with an open heart and a fiery passion for the rock carvings in the area, a dutch lady who stays in the area for about six months a year was able to tell us a lot about the drawings and how they’re trying to preserve them. She gave us some tips on where to go and even knew a nice overnight camping spot, which we used, and was truly lovely. The museum itself was worth a visit if you’re into history, modern archeology and the passionate people...
