The recently renovated museum, with the old 'Picture Museum's' rooms under it's wings, may present any family a daily experience. 'Västerbottens museet' offers three quite different exhibitions; 'The ski exhibition' with the worlds oldest preserved ski, 'Rock Art in Sapmí' that covers the northern Scandinavia's petroglyph's and 'Umeå - memory and future'. And from time to time some temporary exhibitions!

Read moreTotally a must go place when your in Umeå! This probably is one of the most vivid museums I’ve ever been. Starting from the ice age until futuristic art, this place covers everything. And it’s even free! While there could be more information in English (use the Google translator app), the artifacts are beautiful and the same goes for the houses as well. I also enjoyed all the artwork which was displayed. Thanks to me visiting the museum on a weekday not in season; there weren’t a lot of people and I could enjoy the art / objects. Read moreSuper great experience and totally free. There is a gift shop and a cafe you can spend some money at though. There is something for everyone in this museum, its so diverse. If you are interested in art, history, buildings, textiles they have it. If you only got a few hours you might need to pick the most interesting areas. When we visited there were a temporary exhibition about abortion which was heart breaking but such an important topic. If its there go see it.
