Located in Västerås, this sprawling museum (4.4-star rating) offers a unique and immersive look into the cultural history of Västmanland county.
Since 1921, the museum has painstakingly rescued and rebuilt over fifty historical buildings, creating a living village that spans from the 1600s to the late 1900s. As you wander through the 37-acre site, you'll encounter a variety of environments, including farmsteads, a village square, and a schoolhouse. The experience is brought to life by costumed interpreters who cheerfully share stories and knowledge in both Swedish and English.
Visitors rave about the free admission, the beautiful, well-kept grounds, and the diverse range of things to see and do. You can explore period gardens, orchards, and farmlands, and meet native breeds of farm animals like Jämtland goats and Gotland rabbits. There are also craft workshops, a restaurant, and a café, making it a perfect destination for the whole family.
