San Nicola — Attraction in Circolo di Giornico

The San Nicolao curch is one of the most impressive and atmospheric of Ticino's many Romanesque churches. This benedectine church of the XII century (1168) is the most ancient of the roman churches of the Leventina. The building is covered by granite and had been restored in 1945 by P. Mariotta.

Its external walls are decorated with Lombardic designs, while inside is a fresco-decorated choir placed above a beautiful triple-apsed half-sunken crypt.

The church was built in the first half of the twelfth century, governed by a Benedictine monastery. Its exterior is typically simple with rounded Lombardy arches - a series of small arches under the eaves, the south and west doors both decorated with rustic sculpture - the columns of the west door resting on carved animals, a typical Lombardy style. Magnifica e mistica chiesa romanica a una navata, di una semplicità e di una spiritualità grandiose e ciònonostante molto terrena. Un luogo che invita alla meditazione e all’introversione, perchè qui nulla vi distrae. La facciata é quadrata e le pareti della navata sono lunghe il doppio della facciata. L' abside é sopraelevata ed pavimento dell'abside poggia sugli otto pilastri che sostengono le volte della cripta a 3 navate. La parte finale della chiesa suddivisa in due parti, con la cripta aperta verso la navata sembra quasi voler invitare il visitatore ad esplorare da un lato gli oscuri misteri della terra e dall'altro la luce e l'immensità del cielo. Pur essendo di piccole dimensioni la chiesa trasmette al visitatore l'impressione di uno spazio immenso. Non ho mai capito perché, ma ho sempre avuto l'impressione di ritrovarmi in uno spazio molto più grande di quello che oggettivamente é . Sul timpano del portal é leggibile la data 1168, tuttavia secondo gli esperti l'edificio é probabilmente più antico e risale piutosto al secolo XI che non al XII.
