Grande Dixence dam — Attraction in Hérémence

Spectacular site to say the least. Situated in the altitude of 2400 meters the dam was constructed between 1951 and 1961. The concrete wall of the dam has 32 kilometers of internal passages for workers to assure the smooth operation. The top of the dam resembles the Great Chinese wall. Standing on top of it offers breathtaking views of the milky water and snow peaked mountains. There are several car parks at the foot of the dam. You can either walk up along a twisting path or take a cable car both ways or up and then walk down. For those who want to hike along the lake through tunnelled path in the mountains, it would be advisable to stay overnight in the hotel, situated at the foot of the mountain where the path up to the dam begins. To walk along one side of the lake to Arrola will take 5 hours. From Arrola you can take bus back to the dam. Even in summer the temperatures up are quite low, so do not forget your sweater and scarf! The site is open from mid June to end...

Its a few years since I visited but is well worth a visit. The views from the dam top are stunning but the view from the base of it looking up makes you realise how small and insignificant we are.

You have to park in a car park and then walk up to a small cable car for the climb to the top. This isn't free but wasn't expensive. You can walk up to the top of course but I know I am not fit enough. Vehicles carrying disabled people are allowed past the car park so you don't have far to walk to the cable car.

Nice cafe at the top and for the more adventurous people there are paths along the west...
