Susten Pass — Attraction in Innertkirchen

The SUSTENPASS is the 10th highest mountain pass in the Swiss Alps with its 2224 meters elevation. The pass has been known as a mule pass for trading and used since the 17th century but was never strategically important, so the road used today was built as late as from 1938-1946. But for us tourists and travelers it is a very interesting and beautiful pass. Stretching 45 kilometers from Wassen in the east to Innertkirchen in the west. It is so full of fantastic view points, old bridges and dark tunnels. One of the views, from the Obertalbach Bridge, to the Stein Lake, the Stein Glacier and the summit of the Sustenhorn (3503 meters) is absolutely not to be missed on the pass crossing. Near this area we found a narrow road to the Stein Lake and the parking lot by Umpol in front of the Stein Glacier. This is also used as starting point for hikes to for example the Tierbergli Hut. It was fairly cold during our trip so we only went for shorter hikes near the glacier and some fantastic waterfalls. After getting back to the Susten Pass road we had nice lunch at the Steingletscher mountain hotel. Behind the hotel there is a small shop selling delicious alp cheese directly from the dairy. On our way down to Innertkirchen we also found another of the many local cheese makers, the Kühner family near the Gadmen village – very nice alp cheese. We were so lucky to enjoy the Susten Pass on one of the last days before it was closed for the winter and we will be back for more of this spectacular nature.

By the way, near Gadmen is also where the Trift gondola runs to the Trift Bridge/glacier...

What a fantastic day for a drive over the Susten Pass! Today, August 17, 2025, the conditions were absolutely perfect for experiencing this incredible alpine road. The weather was clear, with partly cloudy skies and a comfortable high of 21°C, providing the ideal backdrop for the journey. Cruising with no rain in sight and a very light breeze, every turn presented a new, breathtaking panorama. The road itself was in excellent condition, with no reported restrictions, which meant a smooth and thrilling ride. The absence of any traffic issues allowed for an uninterrupted journey, giving me the freedom to fully appreciate the dramatic scenery. The feeling of climbing from the lush green valleys of the Bernese Highlands up to the high-altitude, rocky terrain was incredible. Each hairpin turn and tunnel brought a new surprise—from glimpses of the stunning Steingletscher glacier to sweeping views of the valley below. For anyone looking for a top-tier driving or cycling experience, the Susten Pass is an absolute must-do. Was alles passieren kann, wenn man links abbiegt anstatt rechts. Die Tour eines Töff-Freundes vom Vortag nachvollziehend, gings vom ZH Unterland in Richtung Innerschweiz. Erster Kurzhalt bei unserem alten Freund Willhelm Tell. Dann weiter nach Wassen (ohne 3malige Umrundung der Kirche) und weiter zum Sustenpass. Kleiner Imbiss auf der Passhöhe und weiter nach Innertkirchen. Dort wäre die Strasse rechts nach Meiringen und zurück über den Brünnig die Vortageswahl gewesen. Nun ja, nach links gehts zum Grimsel und von dort kann man ja immer noch über die Furka wieder ins Reusstal zurück. Also weiter gehts und in Gletsch steht auch schon die Furka Dampfbahn zur Abfahrt bereit. Nur gibt es dort keine Tankstelle und die wäre jetzt nötig. Darum, nächster Halt Oberwald im Goms wo das Gesuchte gefunden wird. Die nächste Entscheidung ist gefragt. Zurück nach Gletsch oder weiter nach Ulrichen wo die Auffahrt zum Nufenen beginnt. Aber halt, wenn man schon unerwarteterweise im Wallis gelandet ist, könnte man doch noch ein paar Aprikosen mitnehmen die am Strassenrand feilgeboten werden. Kaffee auf der Passhöhe tut gut und dann weiter durchs Bedrettotal nach Airolo. Spass muss sein, also über die Tremola in Richtung Gotthard Hospitz. Weil die Verkehrssituation sich verschlechtert gehts gleich weiter über Hospental, Andermatt und durch die Schöllenen nach Göschenen auf die Autobahn. Normalerweise braucht man dafür 20-25 Minuten. 75 Minuten ist ok mit dem Motorrad. Bis zu doppelt solange mit dem Auto. Leider ist das Befahren einer Ferienhauptverkehrsachse am Sonntag ein trickreiches Unterfangen. Vor allem, wenn andere Verkehrsteilnehmer beschliessen ihre Fahrzeuge in einen zu engen Kontakt zu setzen. Unglücklicherweise auf beiden Achsen. Konkret Stau schon vor Flüelen am Seelisberg und der Axenstrasse. Nun ist Stau im Tunnel für Motorradfahrer eine, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes, betäubende Angelegenheit und sollte vermieden werden. Also erneut eine Entscheidung! Weiterfahren bzw -stauen, nach Attinghausen in die Pouletburg oder über den Klausen nach Hause. Wenig erstaunlich, Variante 3 nach dem Motto. Lieber gut gefahren als schlecht gestanden. Allerdings lag diesem Entscheid auch eine Fehlannahme bezüglich Distanz zu Grunde. Die auf ca 35 km geschätzte Fahrt war effektiv 63 km und um 19 Uhr wird es auf 2000 m kühl und neblig. Nachdem dies ohne grosse Probleme erledigt ist geht es an die Querung der nächsten grossen Verkehrsachse, der A3. Auch dort herrscht Ferienverkehr und entsprechend gemütlich ist das Tempo. Zum Glück nur bis Reichenburg, dann gehts über das ZH Oberland mit einem letzten Tankstopp zurück nach Hause. So ist aus einer gemütlichen Sonntagstour ohne spezielles Ziel eine 5 Pässe-Fahrt über ca. 460 km mit einem Besuch in 10 Kantonen geworden. Schön war...
