The Stoos ridge hike from Klingenstock to Fronalpstock is a must do! The hike itself can be tiring with switchbanks and many up and down stairs, but the trail is well maintained. The trail is wide enough for people to cross each other. Would not recommend for bad weather as the ridge is as expected totally exposed.
View's are great with the lake on one side and the valley on the other - It's a 2.5 hr hike but given the numerous photo stops - prepare for about 3.5 hrs. Bring water and a small picnic for a break. Coffee in a thermos is a wonderful idea. There are a couple of seats along the walk. Hiking boots are not essential but recommended. Poles are very useful as well for additional support in the steeper portions
Getting to Klingenstock takes a few stops. We took the train from Zurich HB to Schwyz, then bus to Schwyz Stoosbahn. There we took the funicular railroad up to Stoos village. The funicular was an awesome experience and a great example of Swiss engineering. Then at Stoos - a short walk to the ski lift to...
Β Β Β Read moreWe visited Stoos while staying in Lucerne. This journey took approximately 2 hours. We took the train from Lucerne to Schwyz then a bus to Stoosbahn then funicular up to Stoos village. The funicular was included in the Swiss Pass however the cable cars were not. The Klingenstock cable car wqs closed on a Monday so we took the Fronalpstock which is actually two smaller ones so you have to get off and get on the other one.
Luggage storage: there are lockers available for 2 CHF (coins only) at the funicular station however there are only two larger lockers that would fit a carry on bag, the rest are small personal item sized lockers.
Food: lots of eating options in Stoos village, however once you get up, thereβs only one restaurant and itβs overpriced. We only ate here while we waited for the rain to stop.
Hike: recommend checking weather as it could be snowy and slippery or muddy. Hiking poles were very helpful! Lots of stairs and steps so not quite hard. Stunning views all around, highly recommend. Visited in October for...
Β Β Β Read moreGreat hike but certainly not easy. We took the Stoos Funicular up and then the Kingenstock chair lift. It is an uphill 7-10 walk to this chair. Here is the deal. Fronalpstock has fabulous views of Lucerne. You can get there by walking the ridge trail from Kingerstock or simply take the other chair lift directly to Fronalpstock. The ridge trail from Kingenstock over to Fronalpstock peak is narrow but safe and fun to walk. The views are great. It is essentially moderate up and down. Eventually you climb pretty steeply to huserstock (which the trail passes close to but not up to). After that it is a long downhill followed by a slog of maybe 600 feet steeply up Fronalpstock. After the ridge trail walk this was not easy. There the views are spectacular at the top where you catch the chairlift down. As nice as the ridge trail was (maybe 3 miles) it was perhaps better to take the chairlift directly to Fronalpstock, walk around and take it down. Really beautiful...
