After spending 6 weeks there for independent geological mapping, I know the place very well. Everywhere in the area is beautiful, the paved roads provide easy walks around the lake and to the smaller lake. Walking up to the highest peak on the east side of the lake is not too difficult and the view is spectacular as you can see Martigny and Chamonix from the peak. During late June there is still quite a lot of snow so some areas, especially off the main path are difficult or impossible to access but by mid July most of the snow has melted. Recommended for families, young people and geologists.

Excellent starting point for some hiking in the Swiss/French alps. Amazingly it seems to be quite unknown with everyone just staying at the dam and no one hiking in the mountains behind the lake. Great route from here to ales Marécottes (both accessible with public transport).
