The ticket was 52 CHF for the 5 lake hike and the parking lot costs 5CHF for the whole day which can be either paid at the automatic register or at the cash register for the cable car. If you want to do the Pizol 5 lake hike, it is better not to take the cable car from this point. Instead park at Wangs Talstation. From Wangs, the cable car goes until Pizolhütte via Gaffia and Furt. The hike is not a loop hike but starts at Pizolhütte and ends at Gaffia station from where you can take the cable car back to Wangs Talstation. From this location (Bad Ragaz Talstation), the cable car goes to Laufboden and the trailhead is about 30 minutes away. You can start the hike from here but as the hike ends at Gaffia, you’ll have to take the cable car up to the trailhead and then walk 30 minutes to Laufboden. I finished the hike at ~15:15 and didn’t realize that Gaffia and Laufboden are not easily reachable. The last cable car leaves Laufboden at 16:00. So, please keep this in mind if you are planning to take the cable car for 5 lake hike. In case you, like me, didn’t have time to get to Laufboden from Gaffia after your hike, don’t worry, there’s also a free Pizol shuttle connecting the two valley stations (I didn’t know about this at the time of hiking). The hike itself is very beautiful! It was a bit crowded but the nature was a joy to experience...
Read moreA recommended hike that takes between 4 and 5 hours to complete, depending not only on your ability - but also the conditions. I did it in early October, there was snow and ice on the trail as well as slippery mud, so caution is needed, and on the steep descent to Schottensee, several people fell on the ice.
The colourful water looks best in mid summer with high sunlight, something I didn’t get to see on my visit due to a much lower sun angle. The colours were less vibrant.
It isn’t too busy with people at this time of year, even though it was a weekend. I started at Pizolhütte and hiked up to Wildsee, this was a fairly steep climb but not difficult. The final descent to Gaffia was the worst part, my thighs didn’t thank me the next morning. In total this hike involves 1800ft ascent and...
Read moreThe hike itself (that we made it to) was great and had amazing views. Wasn't very hard to walk on with tennis shoes
That being said, make sure you plan your times carefully - we arrived right before noon, and the lift operators were taking a lunch break. So we had to wait until 1pm to start up the mountain in the cable cars.
The last lift down from the top is at 5, or 5:30 (depending on which one you take) and it took us an hour to get to the top - this left us with about 2.5 hours to hike once we got to pizolhutte.
That ended up not being much, we made it to the first lake (at what I felt was a pretty brisk pace) before turning back to ensure we could get the lift down.
So, make sure you arrive early, between 10 and 11am to have enough time for the...
