Walked up there from the Schönbielhütte, came from Zermatt the day before. I'd fully advise anyone planning on walking the trail to NOT take the cable cars from Zermatt. It's way better to slowly acclimatise and very fulfilling to get to know the area by using your own body. You'll get a nice feel for the massive scale of this place and appreciate the trail way more over simply taking the cable cars.

As of July 2024, this trail is still officially closed. We have done it as many other people with us and I honestly do not understand why it is closed. There are few snow patches on the road, but people can just go around and the creeks were also easily crossable.
