I strongly urge visitors to join the guided tour rather than merely stopping by for photos or a brief visit. Without the tour, the buildings and written descriptions alone cannot convey the depth of their significance. The architecture and texts require context to reveal their full meaning, connecting you to Taiwan’s modern history and the hard-won democracy that emerged after martial law. The tour brings to life the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom, which are otherwise easy to overlook. Our group was intimate, with fewer than ten people, but the guide was exceptional—thoroughly versed in historical figures and events, and strikingly impartial. They explained the reasons behind each person’s imprisonment, shared their reflections and actions post-release, and prompted us to debate the government’s actions at the time. The tour flowed seamlessly for nearly two and a half hours. Auschwitz-Birkenau exposes the depths of human cruelty, prompting reflection in Germany. Similarly, the Green Island Human Rights Memorial unveils Taiwan’s own painful past, urging visitors to think deeply. Without the guided tour, the weight of this history might remain elusive, leaving the site as just another landmark. Yet, it’s disheartening that many still quietly tolerate the lingering influence of those responsible. Democracy is not a given, and younger generations, born into its privileges, must grasp this...
Read moreBy starkly symbolizing how a country can throw off the shackles of despotism —‘Oasis Village’, a former political prison on Green Island/綠島, now lives as a testament to the blood, tears & bravery of 1000s who suffered White Terror & fought for democracy & freedom. There are wonderful and moving, almost living, exhibits and testimonials. Give yourself a good 90 minutes to take it all in and reflect. Kudos to those who have worked to make this museum honor the memories of those who suffered. Free entry and the serene memorial park is nearby...
On the stone board of the park, the names of the people involved in the White Terror were written as the victims. It is written on the plate "how many years they were sentenced" and "whether they were sentenced to death" . I was surprised that the recent record was in 1989 and it wasn't so long ago In order to prepare my mind shock , I intended to watch the fiction movie "Anti-school" with the background of ideological control under martial law in advance, and to have a certain amount of background knowledge . However, standing in front of the stone plate with each person's name on it, the number was so large that I felt a heavy oppressive mood. The park itself is a bright, open and comfortable place. People who seemed to feel comfortable doing gymnastics in the morning and families with small children enjoyed it. I recommend you to go there...
