This is not Japan… This is Monster Village (妖怪村) 👹, a small Japanese style village located in Nantou County, Taiwan. There you can find a torii (Japanese gate)⛩️, cute monster statues👺, beautiful red lanterns🏮, restaurants, and souvenir shops. You can rent a kimono🎎 and stroll around the quaint village for the perfect photo opportunities. Monster Village is quite small, so I recommend planning it as an afternoon activity as part of your itinerary for Sun Moon Lake or hikes around the area such as Dexing Falls (德興瀑布), Songlong Rock Waterfall (松瀧岩瀑布) or Mount Jinganshu (金柑樹山). Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time, so we’ll definitely come back and stay a few nights in the area! 🇹🇼History: During Taiwan’s Japanese rule, two close friends Kubota (Japanese) and Matsubayashi (Taiwanese) worked together in Xitou. After WWII, Kubota and his wife opened a bakery in Japan and named it after Matsubayashi. Years later, the bakery was destroyed by fire and Kubota’s wife passed. Matsubayashi heard about this and sent money to Kubota. Kubota gifted a wooden sculpture to Matsubayashi, which is now located in Ming Shan Resort behind Monster Village. Ming Shan Resort built Monster Village in 2011 to commemorate the friendship of the two men. 🚘How to get here: We took a Taiwan Tourist shuttle bus from Taichung HSR with took about 1-1.5hrs travel time. It takes about 3 hours if you’re coming from Taipei. If you do, I recommend staying overnight in the Xitou area to get the most out of your experience. 🙋🏻‍♀️Tag someone you want to bring with you to Taiwan. Nice little fall to spend a lazy afternoon. The path was curiously built to go around and behind the public toilets to get to the waterfall. The drive to the fall is a bit tricky with some dangerous one-lane hairpins.

Beautiful waterfall. Make sure to walk up to the top using the stairs. Look for the ropes to go up higher. There you will find a hidden pond and another waterfall!

Beautiful waterfall. Make sure to walk up to the top using the stairs. Look for the ropes to go up higher. There you will find a hidden pond and another waterfall!
