Dongshi Forest Garden — Attraction in Taichung

Fire flies galore

If you have any children interested in fire flies, there are several paths to see the active fire flies in the Dongshi Forest in April. The primary viewing area is about a 15 minute walk uphill from the parking lot. The remainder of the path is up and down through the forest.

The fire flies were quite beautiful to observe and there were several valleys along the path full of twinkling fire flies.

It is about an hour drive from Taichung City. The park has a reasonable entry fee and the fire flies usually come out about an hour after sunset.

The only set back was the loud music from a elementary overnight school activity near the parking lot.

Exploration and observation of the living environment for fireflies.

There are two types of fireflies. First are the yellow fireflies, they mostly live around waters or rivers. Then the second is the green fireflies, they prefer to live among grasslands, they are very beautiful.

I was very happy when they landed on my hand, but I don't have a photo, it's too dark.

My experience was quite exciting, only that it was raining, everything was wet and the roads were quite dangerous to walk...

This place has changed a lot comparing to the last time I went, it is currently under a infrastructural maintenance, and the trails is restricted to a significantly smaller zone, as the owner decided to turn a part of the trails into a tree reserved area. I'm not expressing my personal opinion on this decision, whether it is correct or not, only stating the facts here, as I'm only a visitor here and the constructions are yet completed, it is just not a right time to...
